OVERALL CRIME AND SAFETY SITUATION Although most travelers in Vietnam feel relatively safe, crime in general is typical of many other countries throughout the world. Pick pocketing and petty crimes occur, though violent crimes such as armed robbery remain rare in Vietnam. Drug use, which contributes significantly to the crime rate, is an increasing problem in Vietnam, particularly the increasing use of methamphetamine.

OVERALL CRIME AND SAFETY SITUATION: Property crimes (robbery, burglary, breaking and entering, theft) are the most common crimes committed in Fiji, accounting for approximately 62% of all reported incidents. Crimes against the Person are the second most common, accounting for approximately 24% of all reported crimes. Property and personal crimes occur 24 hours a day, though predominantly at night.

An armed gunman fired two point blank rounds at the Spanish Legal Attaché’s vehicle on a crowded Ikoyi street in a botched robbery/carjacking attempt. Because the diplomatic vehicle was armored, the passengers escaped with no injuries. This incident is the second violent armed robbery attempt on a diplomatic vehicle in Nigeria this month.

Menlyn Mall, Pretoria's largest and most visited mall, was the scene of complete pandemonium Tuesday night when eight heavily armed gunmen opened fire inside the mall in their attempt to rob a jewelry store. No Americans were injured.
