Extension of Public Comment Period on GNSO New gTLDs Policy Development Process to 31 January 2006
In order to enable interested parties to prepare substantive comments
on the identified issue areas in this policy development process, the
deadline for comments has been extended to 31 January 2006. In addition, a
call for substantive papers on the topics indicated in the Terms of
Reference, for posting and consideration for oral presentations to the GNSO,
will be issued shortly with the proposed deadline of 31 January 2006.

ICANN Posts .aero, .coop, and .museum Renewal Proposals for Public Comment
ICANN is posting for public comment Renewal Proposals submitted by the
current .aero, .coop, and .museum Sponsors. The current sponsoring
organizations' agreements with ICANN for these three top-level domains will
expire in 2006, and Renewal Proposals have been submitted in accordance with
the terms of the current agreements.

New ICANN Information Page on Proposed VeriSign Settlement
ICANN has posted a new information page
on the proposed
settlement with VeriSign. The page includes links to previously posted
announcements and constituency statements, and also includes newly posted
material: a copy of Paul Twomey's presentation on the settlement from
Vancouver, and a summary and analysis of the community feedback on the
proposed settlement.

ICANN Lawsuit Update: Judge Rules in ICANN's Favor and Denies
Application for Temporary Restraining Order
A US Federal Judge has ruled in ICANN's favor and denied an
application for a Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) against ICANN
sought by industry group CFIT in the US District Court, Northern
District of California.
The application for a TRO was an attempt to block the proposed
settlement of a long-standing dispute between ICANN and VeriSign.
ICANN continues to seek comment from the public and its various
stakeholder groups on the proposed settlement during this week's
ICANN meetings taking place in Vancouver, Canada.

ICANN President's Advisory Committee for IDNs
ICANN is pleased to announce the launch of the President's Advisory Committee for IDNs. The committee will provide the Board and the ICANN community with advice on issues that relate to IDN policies. The first tasks of the committee will include analyzing various issues and implementation opportunities for internationalized top level domains.

As indicated previously, ICANN appreciates the comments and questions about the
proposed VeriSign settlement posted in ICANN's public forum and raised in meetings with staff
since the proposed settlement was announced. The linked Q&A;'s (questions and
answers) are intended to address key issues raised and support further
dialogue and consultation.

Implementation
of Internationalized Top Level Domains As previously
announced, IDN workshop will be held during the ICANN Vancouver meeting.
Accordingly, ICANN is posting the candidate papers received in response to
its earlier call for papers. The papers will be vetted for presentation by a
technical panel being appointed by ICANN.

IDN Guidelines Version 2.0 Finalized
The Guidelines for Implementation of Internationalized Domain Names, version 2.0, is now posted as final following ICANN Board endorsement. The resolution from the ICANN Board contained additional directions and timelines for potentially reframing or revising the IDN Guidelines.

ICANN at the World Summit on Information Society
Stakeholders from many of ICANN's bottom-up partnership structures have
participated in the WSIS process. Key representatives from these groups have
organized a WSIS Working Group, through which several sessions on WSIS have
been held at ICANN meetings. ICANN will participate in the second Phase of
the WSIS, and attend the Tunis summit.

Letter from ICANN Chairman Vint Cerf to GAC Chairman Mohamed Sharil Tarmizi
ICANN Chairman Vint Cerf has written to the Chairman of the ICANN's Government Advisory Committee (GAC), Mohamed Sharil Tarmizi, proposing a special meeting of the GAC and the ICANN Board during the Board's upcoming meeting in Vancouver to discuss what measures can be taken to make our cooperation more effective, including ensuring the participation of developing countries. Strategic Planning Update
In accordance with its plan for consultation and writing the next version of the ICANN's Strategic Plan, ICANN posts the Draft Key Priorities document resulting from the feedback received from the community on the issues paper and the meeting of chairs of the Supporting Organization and Advisory Committees (or their representatives), members of the Board and senior ICANN staff. ICANN seeks feedback from the community on this document either through the public forum or through Supporting Organizations and Advisory Committees. Based on feedback received on this document, a draft strategic plan will be prepared for discussion by the community. Final Proposed Draft IDN Guidelines Posted
The final proposed draft version 2.0 of the Guidelines for implementation of Internationalized Domain
Names is now posted. The draft is currently pending endorsement from the ICANN Board. Additionally, an overview of the actions taken by the working group in response to the comments received on the initially proposed draft has been posted.
