In the heyday of the dotcom era, the "application service provider model" where software is centrally-loaded and accessed via the Web was thought to be the "future of software." With the bursting of the dotcom bubble, many of the early stage ASPs also went away. However, not all ASPs went away, and some like Salesforce.com, in fact have thrived. Now, a new generation of ASPs are emerging, providing new alternatives to traditional software licensing and opening access to many enterprise-class applications to a wide audience who "pay-as-they-go" through a software-as-service model. This panel will explore some of the challenges and opportunities in the ASP model, from both a provider and customer perspective.
