Mission:
The GDOT Rail Program
strives to preserve and enhance the state's rail system for safe and efficient
freight use and future passenger operations. Maintaining rail access gives
the state's agricultural and industrial shippers a needed transportation choice
and is vital for continued economic development.
Quick Facts:
- Georgia has almost 5,000
miles of railroad track
- There are two Class I
railroads operating in the state and 23 class III shortline operators
- GDOT administers an active
corridor preservation program and currently owns 540 miles of railroad right
of way
- GDOT is a key partner
in the Georgia Rail Passenger Program
- GDOT is a lead agency
in the construction of a new multi-modal passenger terminal in downtown Atlanta
- Georgia is a member of
the Southeast High-Speed Rail Coalition, a group made up of several states
to promote rapid and efficient passenger rail services in the South.
