KRPGA History

A Brief History of the KRPGA

  • Organization was originally named CIPSA, Cook Inlet Professional Sportfishing Association
  • This name was changed to Kenai River Guide Association in 1994, in an effort to simplify the name.
  • Both of these organizations were Trout Unlimited Chapters
  • This affiliation with TU created problems as 50% of our membership dues and 85% of any fundraiser revenue went directly to TU.
  • In addition to this revenue problem, the TU chapter had a non-profit status and this greatly influenced "who and what" the organization could support.
  • In January of 1998, the old TU chapter of the Kenai River Guide Association was absolved and a new more politically active organization was formed.
  • The new name: Kenai River Professional Guide Association was chosen to differentiate between the new and old organizations. We also wanted the new organization to represent the PROFESSIONAL Guides of the area and improve our public image by stressing professionalism within our industry.
