Fats : unsaturated and saturated
fats
Fats are also essential parts of a healthy diet and are important
in normal brain development of a child they are the most concentrated
form of energy available to the body. Unfortunately this means
it is also the body's preferred method of storing energy. There
are two main types of fat which are saturated fats and unsaturated
fats. Saturated fats lead to the production of cholesterol which
can lead to heart disease, saturated fats are found in butter,
meat, cheese and lard. Unsaturated fats have very little effect
on cholesterol and some vegetable oils such as olive oil and
sunflower oil lower cholesterol. Many fish oils are unsaturated
fats and a healthy diet should contain these as can help prevent
cardiovascular disease and contain omega oils.
As a general rule we eat to much fat especially in fried
foods and too much fat in cooking. It is a myth that all fats
are bad the body still needs them the important thing to remember
is to keep the overall level low and that most of this is
made of 'good fats' such as fish and olive oils.
