"I've volunteered for the March of Dimes for more than a dozen years and been a member of the Board of Trustees since 1995. I've worked with them to save babies from birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. Now the March of Dimes needs everyone's help for a very special and urgent project.
The devastation of recent hurricanes brought with it some bitter lessons. The disasters have passed... but their tragic aftermath remains. What lies ahead for thousands of pregnant women, now living in cramped shelters or temporary housing, with no transportation and far from medical care? Unless we act, many of their babies will be born too soon and have to fight for their lives.
That's why I'm spearheading a new $5 million fund-raising campaign for the March of Dimes. We need mobile medical units — Mama and Baby Buses — to bring lifesaving prenatal care to women throughout the Gulf Coast and elsewhere. We'll bring our Dream Team — doctors, nurses, medical supplies, the latest technologies and critical health information — right to pregnant women and babies wherever they are.
