From Paotare you can catch prahus to anywhere in East Indonesia. See the helpful guys in the customs office. Sometimes there are prahus to Bima, Flores, Rp9000. From Bima it's easier to get to Kupang or to Komodo Island. Sailing vessels leave from Samudra Harbor is well. kapal motor: At least 5 times a month motorized 100 ton vessels leave for Balikpapan, Rp4000, 2 days, 2 nights if you're lucky; if not, 5-6 days. Check Samudra Harbor, Biro Perjalanan Office, for boat info or to buy tickets for the Pelni boat Larma Satu which sails to Balikpapan weekly, Rp6-7000, takes 2-3 days. (From Pare Pare, north, boats to Balikpapan are cheaper at Rp3500-4000.) Boats also from Samudra Harbor to: Gorontalo, Rpl1,000; Bitung North Celebes, Rp15,000 (Pelni's price is Rp 22,000! 1, takes 5 days. For Gorontalo, try the Kebun Agung which gives a student discount. Costs only Rp9000. Go straight to the captain. Other kapal motors to Surabaya, Donggala (rare), Banjarmasin (Rp3-3500), take 2-3 days. islands near Ujung Pandang: Take a tent and visit some fine deserted beaches and peaceful fishing villages on islands out in Makassar Bay. Sundays are very crowded. Most are reachable within one hour by prahu or 15 minutes by motorboat from the seawall in Ujung Padang. From Terminal Kayangan just past Wisma Ria to Kayangan Island, it's Rp100. Go down a side alley and catch a motorboat also to Lai Lai Island, Rp100; or to SamaIona, Rp1000 each way. There are just 2 families on Samalona; stay with them for only Rp250 full board. On Sunday the scores of wide sails of bright painted craft out in the bay look like butterflies on the wing. From Samalona hop further to Barancadi; there are other islands even further out.

in Bali we must point out a very important distinction which the Balinese make between two clearly separate groups of ancestors. The first of these groups consists of the dead who are riot yet completely purified. This group is in turn subdivided in pirata, those riot yet cremated, and pitara, those already cremated. The former are still completely impure; the latter have been purified, but are still considered as distinct, individual souls. The second group consists of the completely purified ancestors who are considered as divine.
No contact is sought with the pirata, the dead who have not yet been cremated. Oil the contrary they are dangerous, Offerings must however be made for the redemption of their souls.
