half, with rugged saddles and alluvial slopes covered in rich volcanic ash. Crater lakes are found at Batur and at Bratan, Buyan, and Tamblingan in the Bedugul area. The island's mountains, floating amongst the clouds and covered in tall forests. stand in contrast to the stark scenery of the volcanic craters, some of which are still active.
The south central plains are intensively cultivated, with terraced rice fields the dominant feature of the landscape--small rectangles of still water mirroring the clouds. The rivers which irrigate the rice fields come down from the mountains in deep, narrow gorges overgrown with lush tropical vegetation. Running parallel to each other through Gianyar Regency are Bali's two major rivers. the Pakerisan and the Petanu. Both are regarded as holy; it is on their banks where most of the archaeological remains of Bali's ancient kingdoms have been found.
East West travel on the island has always been hampered by deeply cut longitudinal. Even today most highways carry north and south. This difficult topography accounts for the fact that until very famous Bali was divided politically into a series of small rajadoms. The Partitioned, pie-shaped realms of south Bali were always aligned north to south along the ravines rather than east to west, the entire southern drainage of the island was splayed out into unhomogenous, petty states.
In the far south, the tableland and Precipitous limestone cliffs of the arid Bukit Peninsula provide a spectacular setting for the temple of Uluwatu. As you leave the heavily farmed southern plains and head north, the landscape changes from tiers of ricefields to gardens of onions, cabbages, and papayas. which grow better in the cooler climate. In the alpine highlands of the north are mountain stream, prehistoric tree-ferns, wildflowers, creepers, orchids, leeches, butterflies, birds, and screaming monkeys, while tall pines and cypress trees soar high above the mountain villages of Bedugul, Kintamani, and Penelokan. Thatched palm huts change to sturdy cottages made of wood, tile, and stone, built to withstand heavy rains. In the far north there is a sharp drop from the mountains to a narrow strip of fertile coastal plain which nourishes the Buleleng Regency.

in Bali we must point out a very important distinction which the Balinese make between two clearly separate groups of ancestors. The first of these groups consists of the dead who are riot yet completely purified. This group is in turn subdivided in pirata, those riot yet cremated, and pitara, those already cremated. The former are still completely impure; the latter have been purified, but are still considered as distinct, individual souls. The second group consists of the completely purified ancestors who are considered as divine.
No contact is sought with the pirata, the dead who have not yet been cremated. Oil the contrary they are dangerous, Offerings must however be made for the redemption of their souls.
