Rama: Rama is Vishnu as an avatar (incarnation) and represents the ideal Hindu, a gentle husband, a noble prince, a kindly king, and most significantly, a brave leader while under suppression. Site, Rama's wife and an incarnation of Lakshmi, symbolizes the ideal Hindu wife who always remains devoted to her husband. Brahma: The great Hindu God of Creation who carries a sceptre and various other symbols. From his four heads sprang the Vedas, four books written in a complex poetic style. These books of Aryan sacred hymns and verses have an age named after them. Laid down by priests during the Vedic Age of India (1500-500 B.C.), they record Aryan religious beliefs and practices.Shiva: The Hindu God of Destruction. Shiva has many aspects: the intense ascetic, the demon-killer with a headdress of skulls and snakes wound around him, as the Lord of Creation dancing in a circle of divine fire, as the male symbol of fertility. Shiva's followers have a slightly ascetic bias. The cult also has a strong sexual emphasis noted in its emblem, the phallus (lingga) and especially in the mystical sexual union of Shiva and his wife, Durga. Some of Hinduism's other gods are a result of the union of Shiva and Durga, bearing sons such as the elephant-god Ganesha. Shiva's mount is a bull, Nandi, also an old fertility symbol. Nandi is Shiva's constant companion, servant, musician. Shiva wears Nandi's emblem, the crescent moon, on his brow. Parvati: Shiva's wife, the daughter of the Himalayan mountains and the sister of the Ganges. With love she lured Shiva from his asceticism. She represents the unity of the gods and goddesses, of man and woman. This mystical consort of Shiva's comes in different forms: Lima, a mild goddess of light and beauty; Durga, a ferocious 10-armed goddess who rides a tiger and battles demons; Kali,Hinduism's most terrible goddess with an insatiable lust for blood sacrifices. She often appears bloodsmeared, swarming with snakes, wearing necklaces of her son's skulls. Each of these manifestations personify her divine power.

we must point out a very important distinction which the Balinese make between
two clearly separate groups of ancestors. The first of these groups consists
of the dead who are riot yet completely purified. This group is in turn subdivided
in pirata, those riot yet cremated, and pitara, those already cremated. The
former are still completely impure; the latter have been purified, but are still
considered as distinct, individual souls. The second group consists of the completely
purified ancestors who are considered as divine. Everything Bali Indonesia |
