BIG BEND - Family Adventure Trips March
2006
Join us every Wednesday and Thursday in
March as we offer families a real treat during spring break. These overnight
family trips are designed specifically for the kids (or kids at heart) with a
focus on education, fun and a family experience. We accept only families with
children 12 and under so parents can feel comfortable knowing there will be
like groups on every trip. Additionally, these trips are priced with the frugal
family budget in mind.
Educational themes include short walks and hikes to
discover interesting desert plants, fossils and animal tracks; basic
instruction on canoe skills; night vision goggles for gazing at the night sky;
fun and games at camp and much more! Join us for a lifetime of memories!
(All trips will be conducted by
canoe on calm sections of the Rio Grande)
Our itinerary looks something like this:
Tuesday You should consider arriving
on Tuesday in order to prepare for the 8:00 a.m. meeting time on Wednesday. For
area lodging information, see our Where to Stay
section above. If you arrive early on Tuesday, consider one of our Jeep or
ATVtours of the Big Bend. Guests booked on family adventures can take $5/person
off all Jeep or ATV adventures.
Wednesday This is our departure day.
We'll meet at the Far Flung Outdoor Center located on Farm Road 170 in Study
Butte at 8:00 a.m. in order to pack our gear into waterproof bags and make
other last minute preparations. Leaving around 8:30 a.m. we'll travel to the
river where we'll unload the canoes and gear, put on our lifejackets and have a
quick safety talk before the adventure begins. This day finds us traveling
through one of the remote canyon stretches of Big Bend where we will enjoy a
nice riverside lunch and time for some interesting walks into the desert. This
night's camp will be on a sandy beach with plenty of time to relax, swim or
explore. Our guide staff will handle all of the meal preparations as well as
lead the educational programs. Night ends with us stretched out under a
brilliant star filled sky.
Thursday Waking to the smell of cowboy
coffee, the sound of frying bacon and a hearty river breakfast, we'll continue
our journey down the river with time again for some side hikes and a river
lunch. We reach our take-out about mid-afternoon and usually return to our
offices around 4:30-5:00 p.m.
Weather Weather in March is usually ideal with
daytime temperatures in the low 80's and nights a cool 50-60 degrees. Chances
for rain are small this time of year, however please understand this trip will
operate regardless of weather conditions.
