NOTE: Distances given in round figures only - as between general areas From Darwin in the Northern Territory to Kakadu via the Arnhem Highway is an easy 3 hour drive on a good road. However a stop can be made at the Adelaide River (1 hour from Darwin) to see the jumping crocodiles and an overnight stop can be made at Mary River, (2 Hours), to take in a crocodile spotting evening cruise on the river including an al fresco dinner on a sand bank in the river. The mining town of Jabiru is a further 1 ½ hours from Mary River in the middle of Kakadu National Park. There is a choice of staying in the luxurious hotel at Jabiru, built in the form of a crocodile or driving down the Kakadu Highway for half an hour to Gagaju Cooinda Lodge at the site of the famous Yellow Waters. The Yellow Waters Cruises show the fantastic variety of wild life particularly bird life that inhabits this area. From Jabaru and Cooinda Gagaju Lodge, a 4 wheel drive day trip can be made to the Jim Jim Falls and the Twin Falls To see more of the countryside, the return to Darwin can be made via the Kakadu Highway to the Stuart Highway and thence north to Darwin, about three hours or if travelling to Katherine and Alice Springs turn south once the Stuart Highway is reached.
