Baby sitting is a very special decision both for the employee & the parent. Why its special is because, during the babies growing years, they tend to develop and gain on the habits & cultures surrounding them & for baby sitters, if they don't love their job, it could affect the development of the child. So parents have to be ready & knowledgeable with their decision to employ a baby sitter.

Important Guidelines for Baby Sitters:

Baby sitting is more than a job, its about care & love. Baby sitters should have prior experience with older children, infants, etc & should have a stable means of transportation to and from the Job everyday.

During the baby sitter interview the parents should clearly point out the family rules or general guidelines to follow when they are baby-sitting.

  1. Use of Telephone, TV, Radio & Internet. – Baby sitters job is to look after the child; there should be restricted use & only in case of emergencies to use the phone or to watch tv with the child.

  2. Baby sitters should not be casual & encourage friends to come over during work hours.

  3. Should never answer the door or open the door, especially when they are left alone with the child. Parents should test this be sending a close friend to check if the sitter is doing their job by not allowing them in.

  4. Parents should let the baby sitter all-important childcare instructions in the initial interview. Example: what time to let the child go to bed, should they close the child's door etc.

  5. Its good to have a baby web based baby monitor in conjunction with the baby sitter especially if the child is really young.

  6. Its the parents decision to decide if they want a baby sitter who is of a different culture. Hispanic sitters are well known for their dedication.

  7. Parents should give the sitter all the important phone numbers & show them all entry & exit points.

    1. Parent's name, phone number and address.
    2. Parent's departure time & arrival time.
    3. Closest hospital & friends or neighbors numbers in case of emergencies

  8. Baby sitters should daily update parents on

    1. Any problems encountered during the day
    2. If the baby is young , if he was speaking any new words
    3. Feeding times

Parents should never leave exactly when the baby sitter arrives, they should spend at least 15 minutes, doing normal work & let the child adjust to the new nanny or baby sitter. Its important to let the child know before hand that parents would need to go out.
