Improve my little girls hittin'
Hey Folks, I need some help

My little girl (7) is playing in a girls softball league this year. She is having a terrible time hittin' . I'm pitching at least a 100 balls a day. She often starts out missing entirely the first 20 or so then once she starts hittin' she'll hit 30 in row. She is behind the ball when she is missing. Unfortunately she doesn't get 20 warm up pitches in a game so she's striking out most of the time in her games. I'm stumped. She is using a 28-17 bat, I just ordered a 26-16, maybe this will help. Any other ideas.....

One most important suggestion... patience. Don't concentrate too much on hitting and don't expect changing bat sizes to be a cure. It's the carpenter, not the tools. Or, it ain't the arrow, it's the Indian. At her age, she is actually very, very normal. Go watch a game between girls your daughter's age and pay close attention to the girls who are NOT the best; look closely at those who struggle. I went through this with my youngest daughter. For the most part, the ones who are average or below are not as focused as the better ones. But what you'll find out is that it's way too early to tell who's good and who's not. Many of the girls on your daughter's team that perform better than her now will not be there at age 13. It's because they will find other things in there spare time more interesting. Of course some will, but they'll be joined by others who find the entire game; not just hitting, challenging. And that's the key. 100 balls a day at her age is a lot, unless you mix in some pitching, fielding, baserunning and other fun drills. Then she'll figure out which skill she's good at and enjoy doing drills related to her talent. The hitting will come along soon enough. Just don't try to buy her a game. Make it fun. Heck, this game was fun with heavy wood bats.

Hi Doug,

I play softball for an ASA team. The best advice I could give you is to break down the steps. Show her them one by one. Then show her them in one smooth motion. Let her hit off a tee for a while. Then when she has got her swing down, start pitching to her. Make sure her bat isn't too light or too heavy. I wish you and your little girl the best of luck!

Make it fun
Make it fun is great advice. We play whiffle ball in the back yard with throw down bases. Sometimes it is just my nine year old and me, sometimes other kids, too. She hits the heck out of the ball, and even better she ASKS me to go hit balls.

A cheap suggestion!
I am a farther of a daughter that has been playing since she was five......she is now 13. One of the things I found to help tremendously was a cheap little contraption. I found that a clothes line rope thru the middle of some softball sized wiffle balls tied to 2 trees at waiste hieght(in the strike zone) worked wonders for her an me. For starters, It taught her how to swing level ..........if you are not level the balls will not slide down the rope to the otherside but get stuck in the direction the force of the hit was........can become frustrating if your not level. Another thing it helped with was chasing the old balls after they are hit or not hit. The whole contraption cost around 8 dollars and gave us both great satisfaction in the end........good luck to you!:)
