DATELINE:
August 8 to August 19, 2005
On Location: Filming scenes for the upcoming feature film "X-Men
3" with Patrick Stewart and Halle Berry right here at our doorstep - literally! From
August 08 to August 19, 2005 scenes will be filmed around Hatley Castle and the Esquimalt Lagoon right here at our doorstep.
There is a crew of about 200 people for the third instalment in the sci-fi
series.
Most of the filming will be limited to
the first floor of
Hatley Castle, the Italian Garden and croquet pitch. As in X-Men 2,
Hatley Castle is front and centre for the interior shots, taking on the role
of Professor Xavier's School for the Gifted, the X-Men's headquarters.
The cast of Hollywood A-list stars are back for X-Men 3, with Patrick
Stewart as professor Charles Xavier, Halle Berry as Storm, Ian McKellen as
Magneto and Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. Kelsey Grammar, Vinnie Jones and
Maggie Grace have been added in the roles of new mutant characters. The
third instalment based on the popular Marvel Comic, the film is being
directed by Brett Ratner, who took over when X-Men 2 director Matthew Vaughn
dropped out for personal reasons.
Colwood residents
may recall a helicopter battle above
Esquimalt Lagoon
during the filming of X-Men 2 that caused a bit of a stir, because it was
filmed late at night.

DATELINE : April 16 - 20, 2004 A film starring Oscar-nominated Hollywood heart-throb Diane Lane will shoot key scenes in April at Hatley Park on Royal Roads University. Lane's character lives a carefree life in Manhattan. When her son has a close brush with the law, she realizes it's time to make a life-altering change, and she pulls some strings to enter them into a life of wealth and privilege. When she is attacked, their perfect world is shattered. Aside from Lane, who received a Best Actress Academy Award nomination for her steamy role in Unfaithful, the new flick features Canada's own Donald Sutherland (Cold Mountain, The Italian Job, Disclosure) and Anton Yelchin (Taken and Hearts in Atlantis). "We're shooting five days in Victoria," publicist Bill Vigars said, adding that most of that will occur at Royal Roads, where scenes from the X-Men 2, starring Halle Berry, were shot two years ago. One of the more exciting (and visible) highlights will be a hot air balloon race out on the grounds of the university on April 17 and 18.

DATELINE: April, 2003 Human artifacts believed to date as far back as 8,000 years have been discovered right here at Esquimalt Lagoon in recent weeks during excavation for sewers lines in the area. If that is the case, they would be the oldest evidence ever found of human habitation on southern Vancouver Island and be in the range of 8,000-year-old artifacts recovered near Port Hardy.
Two complete skeletons, believed to be 1,000 to 1,500 years old, were discovered much closer to the surface at the lagoon. They will be returned to Victoria area First Nations for reburial ... more

Once or twice a year the USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN moors at Royal Roads anchorage - directly off shore from our Bed &

Bald Eagle Extravaganza A record number of bald eagles converge each year at
Goldstream Provincial Park [10 minutes from Birds of a Feather
B&B] In honour of their return, the visitor Centre offers a number of eagle
related activities. From October through December visitors to the park can watch the
eagles munch on salmon carcasses using the parks telescope and newly built viewing
platform. Take a walk along the river and see feeding eagles in the estuary.

Rare sighting of egret in
Victoria Cattle egrets came from South America to Florida in the
1950's. They reached California in the 1960's and their population continued to
expand. Victoria is quite north of its range. Is El Nino responsible for this
and other incongruous sittings? Other recent sightings here on Vancouver Island
include a brown pelican, a king eider duck, 2 sand hill cranes, an immature golden eagle
and a rough-legged hawk.
Elephant Sea Lion in Victoria is a rare marine mammal sighting
A bull, two females and at least one juvenile male are
residing on the rocks in the ecological reserve in the Juan de Fuca Strait. It appears
they may be trying to start a colony which if so, would be historical. Elephant seals - so
named because of their long snout, which becomes inflated during mating - breed off the
coast of Mexico and California. There are no known colonies off B.C. Looking like a distant cousin of Sesame Street's Snuffle-upagus,
adult elephant seals are the largest of all pinnipeds - mammals with limbs ending in fins.
