New Mission Director for Malawi Sworn In

WASHINGTON, DC - The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) announced today the swearing in of Curt Reintsma as its new Mission Director for Malawi. USAID's Assistant Administrator for Africa, Lloyd O. Pierson, presided at the event and administered the oath to Mr. Reintsma.
As Mission Director for Malawi, Reintsma will oversee a program exceeding $45 million annually. He will direct a complex program in southern Africa. The program comprises development assistance in the areas of basic education, interventions to increase healthier Malawian families, economic growth and sustainable natural resource management and democracy and governance. USAID/Malawi is also implementing the Millennium Challenge Corporation's (MCC) Malawi Threshold Program. In 2005, U.S. economic assistance, including MCC funding, totaled approximately $61 million.
With over 35 years of work in international development, Reintsma is a career Foreign Service Officer with assignments serving in Lesotho, Zaire/DRC, Rwanda and Mauritius. With a strong focus on African issues, Reintsma currently serves as Director for the Office of Sudan Programs in USAID's Africa Bureau. He has previously served in a variety of management positions including: Division Chief for the Office of Agriculture, Environment and Private Sector in the Africa Bureau (1993-1997), Team Leader for Public Liaison in Legislative and Public Affairs (1997-1999), Division Chief for the Office of Operations and Management in the Europe and Eurasia Bureau (2001) and Deputy Director for the Global Development Alliance (2001-2004).
Before joining USAID, Reintsma served as a Peace Corps volunteer on the Indian Ocean islands of Mauritius and Rodrigues (1970-1974). He is fluent in Mauritian Creole and has a working knowledge of French.
Reintsma is a native of Montana and obtained his B.A. in Political Science and International Relations from the University of Texas and his M.A. from the University of Wisconsin in Agricultural Economics. He has five children, Rachel, Glenn, Nicole, Aaron and Lisa.
