Credit is all about rights and responsibilities. The rights
you are granted by state and federal statutes and regulations. The
responsibilities you have to those who have extended you credit.
From 1977 to 1982, I had the privilege to serve as Director of
the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs. For five years, it
was my job to propose laws to protect consumers, to enforce laws
when consumer rights were violated and to educate businesses and
consumers about their rights and the responsibilities each had to
the other.
During my tenure as Director, I observed that practically one–third
of all inquiries and complaints received by the Office of Consumer
Protection, related to credit. An overwhelming number of those inquiries
were caused by a complete lack of information and understanding
of how the system worked and the rights and responsibilities associated
with it. The cause was completely understandable. Government lacked
the funds, the personnel and the channels to properly educate the
public. Business lacked the desire.
In 1995, even with the advent of the Internet, there was still
neither a definitive publication nor central location where consumers
could find reliable, accurate and timely information about the customs,
laws and regulations of the American credit system, their rights
and responsibilities and those products and services which could
help them enhance their credit profile and maximize their credit
dollars.
Credit.com was established to afford consumers access to comprehensive
education, information and "best of breed" credit products
and services. Our goal was then, as it is today, to help consumers
–– regardless of where they may be on the credit spectrum
–– establish, rebuild, enhance and effectively use credit
to get what they want and need, while mitigating the stress of the
application process through the knowledge of what to do and how
to do it.
It is our view that credit is not the enemy. It is not something
to be feared. It is not something to be abused. It is the gatekeeper
to liquidity and financial security. It is a friend.
It is our mission to acquaint you with this most helpful and protective
friend and help you get to know each other.
