February 14 - Valentines Day

The holiday of Valentine's Day probably derives its origins from the ancient Roman feast of Lupercalia. In the early days of Rome, fierce wolves roamed the woods nearby. The Romans called upon one of their gods, Lupercus, to keep the wolves away. A festival held in honor of Lupercus was celebrated February 15th. The festival was celebrated as a spring festival. Their calendar was different at that time, with February falling in early springtime ... more

March 17 - St. Patrick's Day

The person who was to become St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, was born in Wales about AD 385. His given name was Maewyn, and he almost didn't get the job of bishop of Ireland because he lacked the required scholarship. Far from being a saint, until he was 16, he considered himself a pagan. At that age, he was sold into slavery by a group of Irish marauders that raided his village. During his captivity, he became closer to God. He escaped from slavery after 6 years and went to Gaul where he studied in the monastery under St. Germain ... more

Easter weekend:
April 14 -17

As with almost all "Christian" holidays, Easter has been secularized and commercialized. The dichotomous nature of Easter and its symbols, however, is not necessarily a modern fabrication. Since its conception as a holy celebration in the second century, Easter has had its non-religious side. In fact, Easter was originally a pagan festival ... more

May 8 - Mother's Day
May 24 - Victoria Day CA

May 30 - Memorial Day US

Mother's Day celebrations in the United States are credited to Anna M. Jarvis (1864-1948.) Rhea, wife of Cronus, mother of Gods and Goddesses, was worshipped in the ancient Greek empire. In Rome, Cybele, a mother Goddess, was worshipped in 250 BC. In England "Mothering Sunday" is observed on the 4th Sunday in Lent.

Victoria Day, originally known as Empire's Day in the early 1890's, and in 1947 as Commonwealth Day, commemorates Queen Victoria's birth date of May 24, 1819.

Memorial Day has, since 1968, been observed on the last Monday in May to remember those who have died in service of their country. It was first observed on May 30, 1868

June 18 - Father's Day

Sonora Dodd, of Washington, was one of the first people who had the idea of a father's day. Sonora wanted a special day to honour her father, William Smart, a Civil War veteran who's wife died while giving birth to their sixth child. Her father was born in June, so she chose to hold the first Father's Day celebration in Spokane, Washington on June 19, 1910. President Calvin Coolidge, in 1924, supported the idea of a national Father's Day.

In 1966 President Lyndon Johnson declared the 3rd Sunday of June as Father's Day with a presidential proclamation.

July 01 - Canada Day
July 04 - Independence Day (USA)

Canada Day marks the unification of four British colonies on July 1, 1867. A single piece of legislation, known as the British North America (BNA) Act, joined the present-day provinces of Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia together as one nation. Since confederation, six more provinces and three territories were joined under the Act.

In 1982, the Act was amended to include the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and to augment Canada's status from a simple 'dominion' of the British realm to that of a fully autonomous nation within its own right.

September 4 - Labour Day (Canada & USA)

First Monday. Toronto Trades Assembly organized the first North American "workingman's demonstration" on April 15, 1872 when 10,000 Torontonians turned out to watch a parade and listen to speeches calling for abolition of the law which decreed that "trade unions were criminal conspiracies in restraint of trade."  June 28, 1894: US Congress passed an act making the 1st Monday of September of each year a legal holiday in the District of Columbia & the territories including all Federal workers in all states. The individual States still had to enact legislation which 31 States had already done already; Oregon was the first on February 21, 1887. On July 23, 1894 the Canadian Government enacted similar legislation.

While Victoria does not have the Autumn colours that the deciduous trees of the east coast present, October is often one of the nicest travel months on the west coast. The days are still warm with mostly clear blue skies. The crowds have returned to work, or school and most of the attractions and amenities are still open.

November 25 - Thanksgiving Day USA

Remembrance Day, also known as Armistice or Veterans Day (the 11th of November), marks the signing of the armistice to signal the end of World War One.

In 1915 a Canadian Medical Officer, Colonel John McCrae wrote the poem "In Flanders Fields" commemorating the Canadian soldiers that were killed during battle in Northern France.

November 11 is the day when Canada mourns and remembers its fallen soldiers; the poppy has become the symbol for this day. Paper poppies are sold by the Royal Canadian Legion & people wear the poppy whilst remembering.

The history of Christmas dates back over 4000 years. Many of our Christmas traditions were celebrated centuries before the Christ child was born. The 12 days of Christmas, the bright fires, the Yule log, the giving of gifts, carnivals (parades) with floats, carollers who sing while going from house to house, the holiday feasts, and the church processions can all be traced back to the early Mesopotamians.

January 2007
January 1 - New Year's Day

The celebration of the new year is the oldest of all holidays. It was first observed in ancient Babylon about 4000 years ago. In the years around 2000 BC, the Babylonian New Year began with the first New Moon (actually the first visible crescent) after the Vernal Equinox (first day of spring.)  January 1, has no astronomical nor agricultural significance. It is purely arbitrary. In order to set the calendar right, the Roman senate, in 153 BC, declared January 1 to be the beginning of the new year. But tampering continued until Julius Caesar, in 46 BC, established what has come to be known as the Julian Calendar. It again established January 1 as the new year.
