Over the Edge of the World: Magellan's Terrifying Circumnavigation of the Globe
by Authors:
Laurence Bergreen
Hardcover
I would just like to comment on how Magellan died. He was not murdured, but was killed in battle. He set a whole village on fire on the account of the village's not wanting to be Christians. He was an intruder to that land yet he claimed it to be his. Magellan went to battle the natives who believed that he was wrong.
You make it seem as if the natives murdered a hero. True that Magellan was first to circumnavigate the world and that was marvelous, but he was also one of history's greatest murderers. He used the name of Christianity to kill the real owners of the land he set foot on. He was not and never will be a hero.

Reads Like a Speilberg Movie Script!!
So fascinating, it must be fiction!! But it's not! A gripping page-turning read...Reads more like an adventure novel than a work of history..A movie of this book(and Speilberg would have to do it) would seem beyond the realm of belief, but it's true and that's what makes the story and the book so amazing...This is the story of the greatest adventure ever undertaken by mankind ...At least Astronauts know where they are going!...Magellan had no idea...He hoped he knew...Amazing that we would have such a wealth of historial fact to record such an adventure....If you like history, adventure or novels, this book is the book for you!
Read This Book!
It is not every day that a book like "Over the Edge of the World" comes along. We, my husband and I, took our time and read the book aloud together. Whenever we could spare some time (at least once a week) we would sit with a globe and an atlas to read. It was a long and exhilarating journey, worth e v e r y hour! Our slow pace enabled us to get a feeling for the rate at which events happened at that time. No doubt about it: this IS a first rate history book, adventure book, anthropology book, religious book - all in one. Mr Bergreen's phenomenal ability to dig up and organize thousands and thousands of details into a meaningful tapestry enables him to bring to life this unbelivable saga. It makes reading the book like watching a 3D movie - you are right there with the sailors on those ships, in the storms, on the islands, facing their destiny and... returning only to face scandals and travails at home. Through Mr. Bergreen's detailed and impressive even-handed style some aspects of this historical event also become relevant to today's political shenanigans. Last but not least - as we "sailed" through this journey we learned geography (1000 Islands in the Moluccas?), Botany (The Clove!)and History (the fantastic story about China's Grand Fleet!). It is impossible to talk about the book and not mention at least two of its heroic figures: Magellan, of course, and Antonio Pigafetta (Magellan's chronicler, whose mindboggling accounts on everything from storm surges to botanical flora and founa and human sexual behavior are the reason we can share their voyage). These two guys (and all the others as well) were welcomed guests at our home for few months thanks, again, to Mr. Bergreen's elegant prose. If students at high-school could learn history THAT way - it sure would enrich not only their knowledge but their perspective on the human spirit's capablity as well.
very factual & entertaining
I learned a lot from this book. Furthermore, I couldn't put it down... the topic/story was wonderful, the entire book was just written so well, and the facts that you pick up are astounding. definitly a great read!
