Inshore Fishing Along
Costa Rica's Golfo Dulce

Inshore Fishing Calendar

The Gulfo Dulce is one of the deepest Gulfs in the world - more than 1,000 feet in some places.

Surrounded by mountainous rain forest and fed by the Pacific Ocean feeds from the south, the Gulf provides one of the most unique Inshore fishing opportunities on the planet.

This 22 ft. Pro-Line is perfect for inshore fishing. The Pez Iguana is easily maneuverable in shallow water and along the shoreline.

It is comfortable for up to three anglers and is equipped with heavy duty fishing tackle, rods, reels, depth sounder, fish finder, GPS, VHF, and all the US Coast Guard safety equipment.

Fishing in the Gulf is excellent most of the year round. Many world records have been caught here over the years.

Our Captain Mark Corn caught this record Colorado Snapper (24 pounds, 8 ounces)  at the mouth of the Esquinas  River, upper Golfo Dulce, on October 22,  2000.

The reason the fishing is so good in the Gulf is this: the rivers flowing from the mountains surrounding the Gulfo Dulce carry mineral rich waters from the rain forest out into the Gulf.

In addition, there is a well documented "upwelling" in this region feeding into the Gulf from the Pacific Ocean. This simply means the clean deep blue waters of the Gulf Stream offshore flood into the Gulf from open water every day with the tides.

These two factors feed and support an enormous amount of bait fish in the Gulf. It is mother nature's natural bait factory. As we all know, where we find bait, we find large hungry fish.

The Gulf supports many species of fish including four species of snapper, roosterfish, grouper, snook, pompano, amber jack, jack crevalle, cierro mackerel, blue travelli, and many others.

Typical fishing tactics inshore include the following:
  • Fly-fishing for all species.
  • Live bait fishing for large dog-toothed snapper, roosterfish, and snook.
  • Casting lures for snapper and Spanish mackerel.
  • Special night-time bottom fishing for all species.
  • Bait-fishing and -casting at the world-class Rock of Matapalo.
Use our Inshore Fishing Calendar to determine
the best months to catch your favorite species!
