 Illinois' Best Plants

Interpreting Plant Results and Detail

Note: The screen displays featured on this page are reduced to 50% to save image downloading time. They are provided for reference only. You may not be able to read the reduced text; the samples are intended to assist in general page layout orientation.

If your search bears fruit - or flowers, you will be presented with a Plant Results Listing Page.  This page provides a count and a list of all plants meeting your criteria.  This page is intended to serve as "plants at a glance" by listing important elements and characteristics of each match.

The icons are used to represent Bloom Color, Shape, Exposure, Interest, and whether Cultivars Match your criteria.

Cultivars Matching Selection Criteria
The last column in the results, Cultivars Match, represents a unique feature of the Illinois' Best Plants database.  Often a cultivar may have characteristics that differ from the primary plant. A common example of this is plant size.  Rather than restrict your criteria to the primary plant information, the query will search more broadly by examining the characteristics of the primary plant and its cultivars.  If a cultivar matches your criteria, and the primary plant does not, you see a listing for the primary plant.  You can immediately detect these special cases by the cultivar match icon appearing in the last column.

The bottom of each Plant Results Listing Page displays an "Icon Legend" button.  By clicking on this button, a popup window displays showing the icons and their associated description. Notice the sun exposure icon highlighted in the example on both the Icon Legend popup window and the Plant Results Listing Page located behind that window.

Audio
If your plant has a highlighted speaker to the left of the Scientific Plant Name, you can click on this icon to hear the correct pronunciation of the Scientific Plant Name.   Audio files are currently available in 8-bit WAV format. Windows users with Netscape 3.0+ or Internet Explorer 3.0+ and sound capability are able to use this feature. Audio files in 16-bit QuickTime are generated for Macintosh users. The type of audio file presented is based on the computer platform of the user accessing the plant information.
