Fishing Report for Costa RicaCosta Rica Fishing Report Archives February
2005 Fishing Report Well, January has been here and gone, and the fishing here on the Osa was Fantastic! We've had a very busy season so far, and the fish have been co-operating greatly. We have been seeing 15to 20 Sailfish every day, and the Marlin bite has been really hot! Almost every day someone here has landed a Marlin in this area. Most of them have been running 250 to 350 lbs. It has not been uncommon to see two Sails and a Blue up in the pattern ripping through the teasers! We were getting a little concerned that the Yellowfin Tuna were not going to come here this year. We did not see them until about two weeks ago. Then one day, just like that, they started showing their pretty little heads. Last week we landed one that weighed in at 120 lb. Thank you Tuna Gods! The Spinner Dolphins, and the birds are back in action and it looks like another great month ahead. Oddly enough, we are just now starting to dry out here. The rains continued until about one week ago. That is very unusual for this area. But as a result, we have been still seeing LOTS of Large Dorados in the area. They run anywhere from 20 to 45 lbs. Now that the rains have slowed down, we will be seeing less of them, but it has been a great run for us. Wahoo have been all over the place. They have been running between 20 to 50 lbs. They are one of the "choice prizes" sought after. They taste fantastic. They've been really active offshore since December. One day two weeks ago, I was up in the tuna tower 8 miles offhshore, and I saw a Roosterfish crash through the pattern and hit three of our teasers. He looked to be about 25 lbs! I thought I imagined him on the first strike, but then he came up two more times right away. He had to be lost! 8 miles offshore??? That was very odd! The bottom line is, you just never know what you are going to see out there. And speaking of seeing things out there, we have been seeing lots of whales this month. Pilot whales, and humpbacks mostly. That is always a pleasure. Also LOTs and LOTS of Spinner Dolphins! It has been a really nice month on the water. The seas have been calm and lots of action. We hope February. and March bring more of the same. Until next time, Keep your lines tight and the Wasabi close! Capt.
