Appointment of Shayk Sabah Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al Saba as Amir of Kuwait

Secretary Condoleezza Rice
Washington, DC
January 29, 2006

I congratulate Shaykh Sabah Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al Sabah, whom Kuwait’s parliament approved today as the Amir of Kuwait. The United States and Kuwait share a warm, strong friendship, which I know will continue under Amir Shaykh Sabah’s leadership. I had the privilege of meeting with Amir Shaykh Sabah during his official visit to Washington in June and July 2005, and look forward to working with His Highness Amir Shaykh Sabah in his new capacity.

I would also like to congratulate the Kuwaiti government and people on Kuwait’s commitment to their constitution during the transition process. Their respect for the rule of law has been an example to all, demonstrating the foundation of Kuwaiti democracy. The United States will continue to be a close partner with the government and people of Kuwait as our two nations work togeth! er to further our shared goals in the region
