Here are some simple lingerie definitions to help anyone who is not sure of what something might be or mean. Please note that these are intended as a guideline only and may or may not represent all products with a similar or same name.
Baby Doll: A short sleep or lounge gown consisting of formed cups with a loose fitting skirt, sometimes comes with matching panties.
Bodice: The upper sleeveless part of a dress that covers the breasts.
Basque: A combination of the bra and garter belt. Sometimes worn visibly.
Bikini: A low-cut panty that sits on the hip; gives full coverage in the back and front.
BRAS: Several types as described below.
Bustier: A bra that stretches to the waist; looks like a strapless top. Have garters at the bottom.
Demi Cup Bra: A bra that reveals the upper portion of the breasts and exposes the nipple; gives great support. Also known as Shelf Cups.
Half Cup Bra: Half of the breasts and the nipples are covered.
Multiway Bra: A bra that can be worn with or without straps under strapless or halter-neck tops.
Push Up Bra: Cups designed to add bust size and give a more attractive cleavage; contain a special kind of padding, which can be removed.
Silicone Cup Bra: Cups that contain silicone padding instead of fiber padding.
Underwired Bra: A bra with a thin wire sewn into the lower portion of the cups for additional support. Especially suitable for larger breasted women.
Briefs: Top of the panty is at the waist; similar to small shorts.
Camisole: A short loose fitting top that ends at the waistline. Sometimes worn visibly under an open jacket or wool clothes to protect the skin.
Chemise: A straight-hanging short sleep or lounge gown with thin straps on the shoulders.
Chiffon: a type of very thin silk or nylon cloth.
Corset: a stiff piece of underwear designed to make women look slimmer by pulling in the waist and lifting the breasts; lacing at the back makes the corset adjustable. Have garters for stockings.
Crop Top: A very short top that stretches just below the breasts.
Denier: A unit of measure referring to the thickness of the fiber. The lower the number, the thinner the material.
Dressing-gown: A long robe to wear over nightwear.
Embroidery: Designs sewn into fabric by hand or machine.
Flutter: A panty that is elastic on top and loose on the bottom.
Fringe: A decoration consisting of a row of hanging threads or strips.
G-string: A panty with a small front area connected with thin, elastic string in back and around the waist leaving the buttocks exposed. Suitable for wearing under trousers to avoid visible panty line. Usually larger than a thong.
Garter: A piece of elastic with metal or plastic clasps at the end worn round the top of a stocking to prevent it from slipping down. Can be removed if stockings won't be used.
Garter belt: An article of lingerie that consists of adjustable waistband and garter straps; used to hold up stockings.
Halter top: A sleeveless short top that is held in place by a narrow band of cloth round the back of the neck. No shoulder straps are necessary.
Lace: A very delicate fabric which has patterns of holes in it.
Latex: A stretch rubber type material.
Lining: A material attached to the inside of a garment to make it warmer and add modesty.
Long line: A bustier that extends to the hips.
Lurex: Fabric made of a metallic thread.
Matte: Matte look is non-glossy and even, rather than bright and shiny.
Microfiber: An extremely fine synthetic fiber that makes cloths soft, lightweight washable and breathable.
Minimisers: Bras for large-breasted woman to make their bust look smaller.
Net: See through cloth that is made of very fine threads woven together so that there are small evenly spaced holes between them.
Panty: Women's underwear.
Peignoir: A dressing gown made of very thin material. Usually comes with a matching robe.
Rigid: Does not stretch.
Robe: A loose piece of clothing; sometimes reaches the ground.
Satin: A smooth type of cloths that is shiny on one side and matte on the other.
Seamless: A piece of clothing without seems; designed for additional comfort.
Sheer: Very thin, delicate, transparent or see through.
Silk: A very smooth, fine cloth made from the natural fiber that is produced by a kind of moth.
Slit: A narrow cut in the fabric usually made for ease of movements or sex appeal.
Spandex/Lycra: Fabric created from elastic thread which helps a garment to stretch. Lycra is a well-known brand of spandex.
Strapless: A garment without usual narrow bands of material over the shoulders.
Tank top: A sleeveless shirt.
Tap pants: Shorts with loose fitting legs, usually goes higher on the sides.
Teddiette: A teddy with attached garters to keep stockings from falling down.
Teddy: A combination of camisole and panty with high cut legs and usually a thong in back.
Thong: A panty with a thin strip of material in the back that leaves the rear end exposed.
