Costa
Rica Travel Information and Links
A
few things to keep in mind for your trip...
-
You must
have a valid passport to travel into Costa Rica.
-
There
is a Departure Tax upon leaving Costa Rica. (presently the rate is $26.00
per person). It must be paid in cash in U.S. dollars.
Getting
here:
San Jose is a 2 1/2 hour direct flight from Miami, Florida.
Flying
From San Jose to the Osa Peninsula: Direct
flights from S.J. to Pt. Jimenez last 50 minutes and give you a fantastic
bird's eye view of this beautiful country! (Flying is definitely
the fastest, easiest way to the Osa.) **Note** The inter country flights

Driving
From San Jose to the Osa Peninsula: You can drive from San Jose. to
the Osa. The road is completely paved now except for an hour between
Quepos and Dominical. The drive is gorgeous, but be patient.
The mountain roads are winding and steep. The drive from
Dominical
along the beach has stunning vista views! It is an 8-9 hour drive
but worth every minute if you're not in a hurry.
Drive
carefully and DON'T speed. The police do issue tickets and they
are
not
inexpensive.
Be
sure to rent a 4 wheel drive vehicle if driving to the Osa; you will
need it. Watch out for potholes. Although the roads are much better
than they used to be, they still washout during heavy rains. You
should never drive at night.
The
weather: In the "summer season" (the peak travel time) December
until May, the eather in the Osa averages 85-90 Farenheit with calm winds,
calm seas and very little rain. On the beach it can be humid but
out on the boat there is always a breeze, and the fishing is Excellent!
What
To Bring: Bring your personal effects such as any prescription
medications and pharmacy type products, as well as a light rain jacket
just in case, (it IS the rain forest). Also, a "dry bag" is a smart
way to go for things like your cameras, ID, etc. You can buy items like
film, and sun lotion most everywhere, but if you have a particular brand
you can't do without, bring it!
Pack
light, and bring comfortable cotton clothing. Leave your high-heeled
shoes at home (the monkeys won't notice). Do bring good walking /
hiking shoes. Quick drying Sandals are great to have too.
Port
Jimenez
is a quiet little town on the water, with Scarlet Macaws flying over head
and monkeys in the trees everywhere. It has one main road and about
3000 residents total. There are 5 restaurants, 3 grocery stores,
a bank, and many small sodas (bars). There are telephones for public
use and phone cards readily available. There is an Internet cafe
which has 4 or 5 computers with on-line service as well as fax machines,
and a small restaurant in the back.
Flights
arrive and depart several times a day, to different places in the Costa
Rica.
