Florida Saltwater Flyfishing
Equipment Review:
The R.L. Winston BL5 Saltwater Fly Rod Series
by Kent H. Manno, Flyfishing Editor
It
seems the trend this year in the rod market, as reflected by the International
Fly Tackle Dealer Show, is the introduction of several premium rod series
by various manufacturers. Driven by the overall success of multiple piece
rods on the market, the R.L. Winston Company has introduced the BL5 series
of saltwater rods.
Combining boron fibers in the butt for lifting
strength, this 5 piece saltwater rod is lightweight (boron/graphite composite)
with fast action capable of generating high line speeds. Cosmetics include
the trademark Winston teal finish and script graphics. The big plus here
for saltwater anglers, the portability as a 5 piece rod.
Casting this rod is a joy. The boron butt aided
by the soft tip allowed this rod to almost self-load and make accurate
casts. If you are considering a new saltwater rod for bonefish, stripers
or tarpon, cast this rod a few times…you will not be disappointed.
The series has six 9-foot, five-piece rods for
lines from 6w through 12w…with no 11w rod. The rods carry the industry
standard lifetime warranty, but with a hefty price tag of $695. For more
information, contact R.L. Winston Company, 500 South Main Street, P.O.
Box 411, Twin Bridges, MT. 59754. (406)684-5674…or on the WWW at: http://www.winstonrods.com/
