If your original image has more than 256 colors and you intend to use the output in .GIF format, use your image processing program to reduce it to 8 bit color before dicing it. Otherwise, you will have undesirable dithering artifacts in the sub-images, and each one will have its own unique palette, which is bound to cause problems with many browsers. Furthermore, if you try to output from a non-palettized format (such as .JPG) directly into .GIF format, Dicer will apparently hang! Another JPEG-related limitation has surfaced. Certain JPEG files cannot be opened. The workaround is to convert them to TIFFs or BMPs before opening. (Both of these issues are being addressed in the Shareware version, now in Beta testing.) More tips to come... |
Version 0.39 is the latest official public release, incorporating a couple of bug fixes. This will be the final Freeware version, barring necessary bug fixes. It will remain available indefinitely. |
PictureDicer is a Freeware tool that chops any image file into several smaller images, suitable for creating mouseover effects and pseudo-imagemaps on Web pages. It also generates the HTML for a table to contain the partial images and display them so they appear as the original uncut image. This version will accept and output Windows .BMP, .DIB, .GIF, .JPG, .PCX, .TGA and .TIF files. Support for Progressive JPEG may appear in a future Shareware version. If you start with an existing .JPG, even if it is converted to a .BMP and the resulting images back to .JPG, there will be some degradation of image quality. This is unavoidable, so it's recommended that you never start from a .JPG, but save the output of your picture editor in a lossless format. Another little quirk: if you are going to output to a palettized format such as .GIF, your input must also be in a palettized format or the program will appear to hang (see the readme file). The Shareware version will support several color conversion options. I prepared the demonstration images on this page in under 5 minutes. At the top of the page you should see the recombined image of the program's splash screen. Below, for comparison, I have inserted some space between the cells. If you move your mouse around on the image at the top of the page, you'll see a demo of the mouse rollover effect, courtesy of JavaScript. The Shareware version will generate the JavaScript as well as the HTML. |

PictureDicer is Freeware. There is no charge, and no strings attached. However, if you would like to contribute to the Development Fund, email me for my postal address. All contributions gratefully accepted! PictureDicer Pro, the Shareware version, with many enhancements (and more to come), is now in beta testing. If you want to be a beta tester, or have any comments or suggestions, contact me here as well. And thank you! (Oh, yes: the Freeware version will remain available. The current version is, barring necessary bug fixes, the final one. All new features will appear in the Shareware version.) |
