Discussion on prospects of sports tourism held nepal news, news in nepal, wildlife in nepal, nepal wildlife, chitwan wildlife, bardia wildlife In a bid to share ideas among various persons and institutions associated with tourism and sports, a one-day workshop on "Prospect of Sports Tourism in Nepal" was organised at the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) Hall on January 27, 2006.
The workshop was jointly inaugurated by Mr. Radha Krishna Mainali, Minister for Education and Sports and State Minister Mrs. Yankila Sherpa, State Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation. They pointed out the need for promotion of tourism and sports activities simultaneously.
They also emphasised that the government and private sector have to work together to give a boost to the sports and tourism sectors.
Noted development planner and the first Tourism Minister of Nepal Dr. Harka Gurung, who chaired the working session, said that efforts must be made towards the development of sports and tourism sectors. Presenting his paper on Prospect of Sports Tourism in Nepal, Mr. Dipendra Purus Dhakal, former Secretary of Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, explored avenues of co-relation between tourism and sports. He suggested that international sports events could help promote tourism. He called on the government to celebrate Sports Tourism Year so as to jointly highlight tradition, ethnic culture and adventure sports.
On the occasion, environmentalist-turn tourism entrepreneur Mr. Karna Sakya requested the concerned authorities to seek sponsorship for sports events from international cigarette and whisky brand who have unlimited resource for advertisement.
A number of high level officials of His Majesty's Government, tourism entrepreneurs, chiefs of associations, representatives of the National Planning Commission (NPC), National Sports Council and others promoting sports tourism spoke about the need for exploring this potential sector.
