April 2, 2005 - Zero Tolerance for Drivers under 21

The message about the dangers of drinking and driving is loud and clear but many young drivers don't know they are held to a higher - actually lower standard. Florida drivers under 21 who are stopped and have a blood alcohol level of .02 or higher will automatically have their driving privilege suspended for 6 months. Keep in mind that for drivers over 21 the legal limit is .08

How much can you drink and be below a level of .02 - the answer is pretty much zero - not a drop. If you are under 21 you can't drink any alcohol and then get behind the wheel. Checkout the Blood Alcohol Content Calculator created by the University of Oklahoma Police Department.

A License is Easy to Lose

Even after a few drinks the BAC (blood alcohol content) calculator is so easy to use that you'll be able to tell you should not be driving. We ran a calculation with 1 light beer in 1 hour assuming you weigh 160 pounds. Guess what? You're at .02. Another factor to keep in mind is that if you refuse to take the test then your driving privilege is automatically suspended for one year. Contrary to what many lawyers advertise there is no easy way out. If you drink and drive you're going to lose your license for a while. And it's going to cost you on average $8000.

Driving Under the Influence

Alcohol is not the only way to lose your Florida drivers license. The Florida Drivers Manual also applies these same rules to controlled substances. Included in the list is prescription drugs, depressants, stimulants, narcotics, hallucinogens, and inhalants. So don't drink, small, or sniff anything before you get behind the wheel.
