Western Social Dance: An Overview of the Collection

For centuries, in Europe and wherever Europeans have settled, the ballroom was the perfect setting for men and women to demonstrate their dancing abilities, to show their awareness of the latest fashions, and to display their mastery of polite behavior--qualities required for acceptance in society. The importance of dance and appropriate conduct was echoed in manuals that date back to the early Renaissance, to a time when courtiers, gentry, and wealthy citizens were fortunate enough to have a private dancing master or to have taken advantage of the skills of itinerant masters who traveled from one court to another.

The grandeur of the Baroque court of King Louis XIV and his court at the Palace of Versailles set the stage for a new style of dance that would spread to royal courts throughout Europe. With the development of a dance notation system, published in 1700 by dancing master Raoul-Auger Feuillet, French court dance could be taught in every palace and manor house. By the end of the eighteenth century, when ideals of democracy swept through nations, group dances gained popularity, so dance instruction manuals, as well as etiquette books, were published to enlighten a growing middle class of Europeans and European colonists, especially those in the Americas.

About the Dance Division

The Jerome Robbins Dance Division of The New York Public Library is the largest and most comprehensive archive in the world devoted to the documentation of dance. Chronicling the art of dance in all its manifestations - ballet, ethnic, modern, social, and folk - the division is much more than a library in the usual sense of the word. It is part museum, part film production center, and part consulting service to the professional dance community. It preserves the history of dance by gathering diverse written, visual, and aural resources, and it works to ensure the art forms continuity through an active documentation program.

Founded in 1944 as a separate division of The Research Libraries of The New York Public Library, the Dance Division is used regularly by choreographers, dancers, critics, historians, journalists, publicists, filmmakers, graphic artists, students, and the general public. Working with the division's vast resources, a user can reconstruct an Elizabethan court dance, a 19th-century Italian tarantella, or a 20th-century Ceylonese devil dance; determine what makeup Nijinsky wore in Scheherazade; learn the problems Picasso faced in working on the ballet Parade from letters in his own hand; or compare the modern dance styles of Isadora Duncan, Martha Graham, and Doris Humphrey.

While the division contains more than 42,000 reference books about dance, these account for only 3 percent of its vast holdings

The Origin And Growth Of Lyric Poetry

Bengali poetic literature, by now reasonably matured, gingerly stepped into the phase of musical poems or lyric poetry. It was born from the intensely personal feeling or emotion of the poet. So, ballads are inextricably interlinked with the lives of poets. The personal emotions, thinkings and colourful imaginations of the poets were as if personified through this musical catharsis. Such was the charm of lyric poetry. From the second half of the nineteenth century, exquisite lyric poetry began to blossom in Bengal. This can be said to have been started from 1862.

BIHARI CHAKRABORTY (1835-1898)

Biharilal Chakraborty was the first conscious poet of modern lyric poetry. He was immensely infatuated to lyricism in poetry at a time when epic poetry was ruling the roost. He was the chief witness and a renowned exponent of the remarkable transition of Bengali poetic literature from its epic grandeur to lyrical simplicity.

The notable poesy of Biharilal which were published, are as follows: 'Sangeet Satak' (1862), 'Banga Sundari' (1870), 'Nisarga Sandarshana' (1870), 'Bandhu Biyog' (1870), 'Prem-Prabahini' (1871), 'Sarada Mangal' (1879), 'Sadher Ashana' and 'Baul Bingshati'.

SURENDRANATH MAZUMDER (1838-1878)

The early phase of poet Surendranath's career reveals the narrative style of writing. 'Sabita Sudarshana' (1870), 'Phullora' (1870) etc. are ideal examples.

Discussion: Patterning Strategies

What patterning strategies seem to be most common in lyric poetry?

How do these strategies relate to the lyrical quality of these poems?

Is there any relationship between the patterning strategies used and the tempo of the poem?

Responses:

Most of the poems we have seen have rhyme and repetition. The rhyme helps with the beat and keeps you interested in the poem. The patterning strategies keep the tempo in line with the subject of the poem. Repetition helps to hold the poem together.

Rhyming and repetiotion were used in most patterning strategies

The patterning strategies that seem to be most common are rhyming and repetition. These strategies relate to the lyrical quality of these poems because songs use rhyming and repetition. We found that there aren't any relationships between the patterning strategies and the tempo of the poem.

Rhyming and repetition seem to be the most common patterning strategies. The strategies make the poems sound more like a song. Rhyming makes the poem have a stronger and quicker beats.

Some of the most common patterning strategies seem to be rhyming and repitition. These strategies relate to the lyrical quality of these poems by having a flow and beat (rhythm).

Western dance history

Country western dance history

by Lori Heikkila

Dance, along with music, has always dynamically expressed the spirit and personality of every culture. Modern western dance is part western dance historyof this global language and its roots run wide and deep. They can be traced to the taverns of Ireland and to the ballrooms of Europe, to the Czarist palaces of Russia and further back still to the fluid tribal rituals of Africa. Representatives from all of these cultures brought their native dances when they landed in America. Widely differing peoples who had little or no exposure to one another gathered and danced on common ground.

The cowboy was not the most limber of creatures. The long hours in the saddle and strenuous work produced dancers of questionable finesse. He was not of a temperament to master intricate dance steps or to gracefully lead a fair maiden across the floor to the strains of a fiddler's reel. Rather he would join a dance with a wild whoop and a goat cry. Joseph McCoy, the first great cattle baron, wrote in 1874 that the cowboy "usually enters the dance with a peculiar zest, his eyes lit up with excitement, liquor and lust. He stomps in without stopping to divest himself of his sombrero, spurs or pistols." This dance style was not so much original as it was a spontaneous adaptation of traditional moves brought west by various immigrant cultures.

Puritanical thought, religious prohibitions and traditional customs firmly established the in East began to move West with the pioneers. Worldly pleasures such as dancing were often frowned upon, and when not altogether banned, were designed to keep contact and spontaneity at a minimum. Consequently, it was the minuet, cotillion, pattern dances, courtly processions, and "safe" folk dances that were favored by the early settlers

History of Swing Dancing

By: Lori Heikkila

The history of swing dates back to the 1920's, where the black community, while dancing to contemporary Jazz music, discovered the Charleston and the Lindy Hop.

On March 26, 1926, the Savoy Ballroom opened its doors in New York. The Savoy was an immediate success with its block-long dance floor and a raised double bandstand. Nightly dancing attracted most of the best dancers in the New York area. Stimulated by the presence of great dancers and the best black bands, music at the Savoy was largely Swinging Jazz. One evening in 1927, following Lindbergh's flight to Paris, a local dance enthusiast named "Shorty George" Snowden was watching some of the dancing couples. A newspaper reporter asked him what dance they were doing, and it just so happened that there was a newspaper with an article about Lindbergh's flight sitting on the bench next to them. The title of the article read, "Lindy Hops The Atlantic," and George just sort of read that and said, "Lindy Hop" and the name stuck.

In the mid 1930's, a bouncy six beat variant was named the Jitterbug by the band leader Cab Calloway when he introduced a tune in 1934 entitled "Jitterbug".

With the discovery of the Lindy Hop and the Jitterbug, the communities began dancing to the contemporary Jazz and Swing music as it was evolving at the time, with Benny Goodman leading the action.

Polka

Polka is defined as a vivacious couple dance of Bohemian origin in duple time was a basic pattern of hop-step-close-step; a lively Bohemian dance tune in 2/4 time.

The polka was originally a Czech peasant dance, developed in Eastern Bohemia (now part of Czechoslovakia). Bohemian historians believe that the polka was invented by a peasant girl (Anna Slezak, in Labska Tynice in 1834) one Sunday for her amusement. It was composed to a folk song "Strycek Nimra Koupil Simla (Uncle Nimra brought a white horse)." Anna called the step "Madera" because of its quickness and liveliness.

The dance was first introduced into the ballrooms of Prague in 1835. The name of the dance (pulka) is Czech for "half-step", referring to the rapid shift from one foot to the other.

History of Salsa

Salsa is not easily defined. Who invented salsa? The Cubans, Puerto Ricans? Salsa is a distillation of many Latin and Afro-Caribbean dances. Each played a large part in its evolution.

Salsa is similar to Mambo in that both have a pattern of six steps danced over eight counts of music. The dances share many of the same moves. In Salsa, turns have become an important feature, so the overall look and feel are quite different form those of Mambo. Mambo moves generally forward and backward, whereas, Salsa has more of a side to side feel.

Manjul Bhargava: An Artist of Music and Math

Morning Edition, October 18, 2004 . At 28, Manjul Bhargava has already won a coveted full professorship at Princeton University. An expert in number theory, the study of the properties and relationships of numbers, Bhargava is also a master of the tabla, a small Indian hand drum used to create music with rhythmic, precise patterns.

Number theory is the type of math that describes the swirl in the head of a sunflower and the curve of a chambered nautilus. Bhargava says it's also hidden in the rhythms of classical Indian music, which is both mathematical and improvisational. He sees close links between his two loves -- both create beauty and elegance by weaving together seemingly unconnected ideas.

As part of a Morning Edition series exploring the intersection of art and science, NPR's Richard Harris reports on the beauty of mathematics, its ties to art -- and the man who straddles both worlds.
