Texas Agricultural Finance Authority (TAFA)
The Texas Agricultural Finance Authority was created in 1987 as a Public Authority within the Texas Department of Agriculture. TAFA provides financial assistance to creditworthy individuals and businesses. TAFA works in partnership with banks or other agricultural lending institutions through three programs to eligible agricultural and rural businesses.

TAFA provides financial assistance through loan guarantees to eligible applicants, age 18 to 39 years, who wish to establish or enhance their farm or ranch operation or to establish an agricultural-related business. The program provides up to a 90 percent guarantee, not to exceed $250,000, to a lender for an eligible applicant. The program also offers a reduced interest rate to eligible borrowers.

American Agriculture

The first two decades of the 20th century turned out to be the golden age of American agriculture. Farm prices were high as demand for goods increased and land values rose. Technical advances continued to improve productivity.

American agriculture increasingly has become an "agribusiness." Agribusiness includes a variety of farm businesses and structures, from small, one-family corporations to huge conglomerates or multinational firms town large tracts of land or that produce goods and materials used by farmers. Sometimes owned by absentee stockholders, these corporate farms use more machinery and far fewer farm hands. In 1940, there were 6 million farms averaging 67 hectares each. By the late 1990s, there were only about 2.2 million farms averaging 190 hectares in size. During roughly this same period, farm employment declined dramatically -- from 12.5 million in 1930 to 1.2 million in the 1990s. In 1900, half of the labor force were farmers.

Pumpkin Producer

Frey Farms, located in Keenes, Ill., east of Mt. Vernon, is among the state’s top producers. Company president Sarah Frey-Talley and her four brothers devote 750 acres of their family’s 1,200-acre farm to pumpkins and contract with growers throughout southeastern Illinois to produce pumpkins on an additional 750 acres.

This year, Frey Farms sold one million pumpkins to the nation’s largest vegetable retailer, Wal-Mart, which ships them to its stores nationwide. Another 500,000 pumpkins were bought from non-contract growers and re-sold to other distribution centers and retail outlets.

Illinois is not only the nation’s leading pumpkin producer, but also its leading pumpkin processor. In fact, most of its production is canned at one of two plants near Peoria — Libby’s in Morton or Seneca Foods in Princeville — and used to make pies and other dishes. According to Bob Reese, a marketing representative for the Illinois Department of Agriculture, an estimated 95 percent of the pumpkins processed in the United States are grown in Illinois.

Orders Pineapple Plantlets

Accra, Oct. 11, GNA - The Ghana Export Promotion Council (GEPC) has begun placing orders for MD2 pineapple plantlets from local and foreign producers to meet international market demand for Ghanaian pineapples following the Government's release of two million dollars to the Council.

MD2, also known as the Extra Sweet Pineapple, is now the most valued variety on the European Union (EU) market while demand for the Smooth Cayenne, which formed the bulk of Ghana's export had had gone down leading to loss of revenue.

Bomart Farms Limited in the Eastern Region and the Botany Department of the University of Ghana have not received any orders although they also developed the MD2 plantlets from tissue culture materials confirmed by DNA tests.

Tobacco Products Wholesale

The tobacco products wholesale is, as of the date of the new Law, subject of a special license from the Government of the Republicof Serbia. The Government grants the license for wholesale of tobacco products, upon the proposal of the Tobacco Agency, and only to those entities which fulfill conditions imposed by the law. The conditions relate to the (i) wholesaler's capacities to store tobacco products (at least 30 tons in total); (ii) wholesaler's capacity to transport tobacco products to the retailers as well as to (iii) wholesaler being a party to the agreement on supply with the registered producer or importer of the tobacco products.

The wholesalers license is granted for a period of 5 years, for which the wholesalers are charged a fee amounting to 5,000,000 YUM (approximately 83,000 EUR), payable in 5 annual installments. Furthermore, prior to being entered into the Tobacco Wholesale Registry, the wholesalers are obliged to deposit 30,000,000 YUM to the bank on the territory of the Republic of Serbia or provide bank guarantee (not specified to whom, but presumably to the Agency) of the same amount. The deposit or the bank guarantee serve as the security for wholesaler's fulfillment of all fiscal and other obligations.

The existing tobacco wholesalers (entities who were registered for performing tobacco products wholesale on January 1, 2003) are entitled to carry on with its activities until they are granted with the respective license, but not later than six months after taking into effect of this legislation.

Their costumes have pointed tails, metal helmets with horns and they carry three pronged spears or chains.
