The Sovereign of the Seas, also known as Man of War was built by King Charles I at East Boston, Massachusetts in 1637. At the time of her construction, The Sovereign Of The Seas was considered to be a masterpiece as she was far and away the largest and most powerful ship in the world. This truly opulent ship, built for the king of England in order to stroke his ego, was a massive undertaking by shipbuilders of Britain. Her completion required the labors of over a thousand craftsmen for three years. Sovereign Of The Sea was the most extravagantly decorated warship in the Royal Navy, and the money spent making her so helped to create the financial crisis for Charles I that contributed to the English Civil War. For sixty years she ruled the seas unmatched. Even today, Sovereign of The Seas is renowned as one of the most beautiful vessels ever to sail the oceans and she is considered a true work of art.
