2/2/2006 Update on Fred and Darlin'

Fred and Darlin' at home

Regular visitors to our website are familiar with Fred and Darlin’.   We write about them often.   We love them so much that we can’t stop talking about them.   One reason we love them so much is because we’ve known them so long.   They’re 15 years old now and we’ve had them since they were weeks old.  Actually, we don’t have them anymore because we adopted them out a few months ago, but we feel like we still have them because they live close by and we get to visit them often. Please continue reading.

Memoriam to Patrick

You must read the following. It is a most loving tribute from a wonderful woman who adopted a dog from us in 2001. The dog has now passed away and in reading her tribute you will come to have a better understanding of the bond between humans and animals. It's letters like this that give shelter workers their greatest reward. Please read on.

In Oct. 2001, I adopted Patrick, an approximately ten-year old, one-eyed, blonde cocker spaniel who had been in your care for about two years.

I just wanted to let you know that Patrick passed away in late Nov. 2005 after living a very comfortable life filled with love and affection. Patrick succumbed to old age and died peacefully in his sleep in our home after a long battle with declining health. He may have been in your shelter awaiting adoption but in truth it is he who rescued and adopted me.  I tried to call you to let you l know but I began to cry and could not get the words out.  I miss him very much. I will eternally miss him but am so grateful you all took the time to never give up on him until we were united. He brought such peace and joy into my life because of you at SOAR. there's more

Tux comes back for a visit.

Tux now lives in the Chapel Hill area and we were thrilled to death when we heard he would be back in our area and would come over for a visit. His parents, Dan and Pam, came with Tux and we had a great reunion. Tux has a great family and is really doing well. Take a look for yourself.

Meet Archie. Hounds are not the smartest of dogs but they'll give any breed a run for their money when it comes to sweetness and gentleness. Archie is no exception; he's so nice and friendly; and we believe you will love him. We do.

Take a look at Fred and Darlin' in Gisela's home. They're living like a king and queen in their own bedroom suite. Fred and Darlin' are in the last part of their lives and Gisela has given them the home that they so richly deserve. They are SOAR's most beloved and honored dogs. They came to us 14 years ago and never left and, until now, had always lived outside. They are not in good health now and time is short. But the last days (and we hope months and years) of their lives will be spent in great comfort with Gisela. As you can see it sure didn't take long for them to learn how to live indoors and to make themselves right at home. So, maybe you can teach old dogs new tricks. Gisela, SOAR is so appreciative for your generosity and kindness and willingness to open your home to our animals that need it most. Thank you Gisela. For more pics please click here.

It took 14 years but Fred and Darlin' now have an adoptive home. The same wonderful woman, Gisela, that gave Wilma and L. T. a home has now taken Fred and Darlin'. They had never been away from SOAR before. They are very old, have arthritis, Fred has been diagnosed with cancer, and Darlin', for a reason we've been unable to determine, has lost probably half of her body weight and is thin beyond imagination. They do not have a long time to live but whatever days they have left will be spent in the comfort of Gisela's home with her and her other dogs. Thank you Gisela.

We are adopting animals now only on Saturdays. We had been open on Wednesdays, but until further notice, we will only be open on Saturdays.

We want Congress to take immediate action and order the full support of federal responders and relief workers to save animals. We also need Congress to make sure this never, ever happens again, by passing the Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards Act (PETS Act, H.R. 3858), which was just introduced this week. Please sign this new petition today!
