National Child Passenger Safety Week, February 12--18, 2006
Booster seats in motor vehicles are recommended for children aged 4--8 years. In 2004, 424 children in that age group died, and 70,000 were treated for injuries after crashes. National Child Passenger Safety Week, February 12--18, focuses on increasing use of booster seats, now at only 10%--20%.
 

Racial/Ethnic Disparities in Diagnoses of HIV/AIDS
33 States, 2001--2004

Although blacks account for approximately 13% of the U.S. population, they represent 47% of the estimated 1.2 million persons living with HIV infection. This report describes racial/ethnic disparities in diagnoses of HIV/AIDS during 2001--2004, based on data from 33 states. Of the estimated 157,252 diagnoses of HIV infection, the number of cases and rates of diagnosis among blacks were higher than those for all other racial/ethnic populations combined.

Surveillance Guidelines for Smallpox Vaccine (vaccinia) Adverse Reactions

In January 2003, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services implemented a preparedness program in which potential first responders to a biologic terrorism event received smallpox vaccine. As part of the program, CDC, in consultation with experts, established surveillance case definitions for adverse events resulting from smallpox vaccination. This report provides uniform criteria used for the surveillance case definition and classification for adverse reactions to small vaccine.

Prevalence of Four Developmental Disabilities Among Children Aged 8 Years --- Metropolitan Atlanta Developmental Disabilities Surveillance Program, 1996 and 2000

In the United States, developmental disabilities affect approximately 17% of children aged <18 years, resulting in substantial financial and social costs. This report provides data from 1996 and 2000 on the Metropolitan Atlanta Developmental Disabilities Surveillance Program (MADDSP), which monitors the occurrence of mental retardation, cerebral palsy, hearing loss, vision impairment, and autism spectrum disorders among children aged 8 years in the five-county metropolitan Atlanta area (Clayton, Cobb, DeKalb, Fulton, and Gwinnett).

In June 2005, ACIP approved the Adult Immunization Schedule for October 2005--September 2006. This schedule has also been approved by the American Academy of Family Physicians and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
