Key West has some spectacular offshore
fishing. Sailfish, tuna, mahi-mahi, wahoo, marlin and king
mackerel, just to name a few. These fish are taken by trolling or
using live baits drifted along a color change, weed line or wreck.
Key West offshore fishing can produce some very nice catches all year
long.

Offshore
Fishing by Trolling
The offshore
trolling boats are the larger of the charter boats n Key
West. Normally running 35 to 50 foot in length.
These offshore charters fish almost exclusively in the Atlantic
for all of the pelagic species of fish the inhabit the Key West
waters. The method of fishing is trolling with artificial
baits, natural dead baits or a combination of both. These
charter boats will take up to 6 passengers fishing for a half
day or full day charter. When a fish is hooked it is
fought in the fighting chair with heavy tackle ranging from 30
to 80 pound line. |

Offshore Fishing with
Light Tackle
Fishing
with light tackle is a lot different. For one, the fish
fight harder on light tackle. The light tackle charter
boats use live bait and sometimes live chum to lure the fish in
close to the boat. This can account for some unbelievable
strikes close to the boat. The fish are fought on light
line ranging from 8 pound to 30 pounds. Very fun and very
productive method of fishing in Key West and the Florida
Keys.
