Professional Development Series (PDS)
The professional development Series includes seven Emergency Management Institute independent study courses that provide a well-rounded set of fundamentals for those in the emergency management profession. Many students build on this foundation to develop their careers.
Students who complete all the courses will receive a PDS Certificate of Completion. The courses, in recommended order of completion, are:
- IS230 Principles of Emergency Management
- IS235 Emergency Planning
- IS242 Effective Communication
- IS241 Decision Making and Problem Solving
- IS240 Leadership and Influence
- IS244 Developing and Managing Volunteers
- IS139 Exercise Design
IS-230 Principles of Emergency Management Understanding the fundamental principles and practices of emergency management provides a framework for the future professional growth of every emergency manager and responder. This course is designed to provide a basic framework of understanding of emergency management in the following areas:
- Overview of the Integrated Emergency Management System
- The emergency management cycle
- The Plan as program centerpiece
- Planning and coordination
- Functions of an emergency management program
- Emergency management program participants
- Applying emergency management principles

Professional Development Courses 2005
The FSC is commited to career development and professional training in the environment and its one of the UK's leading providers of taxonomic training. Each year we offer a wide range of courses , many of which are accredited and certified by awarding bodies, to help individuals develop their skills. Some allow participants to earn hours or points towards Continuing professional development training Schemes.
Many of these courses will be suitable for people with a professional and vocational interest in the environment. This may include planners or local Agenda 21 officers, as well as professionals, students and naturalists who are keen to develop their skills in environmental surveying, monitoring and assessment. Meeting the Challenge of Leadership and Management
A Professional Development Program for Middle Managers
One of the major challenges for middle managers is to meet increased demands for productivity and output with limited human and financial resources. This comprehensive and challenging program will give participants the opportunity to learn practical strategies to manage themselves, their team and performance. The program involves an initial two-day course with half-day sessions on 'leadership and self management', 'communication and change', 'managing for performance' and 'developing a high performing team'.
To support this learning participants are involved in a number of activities to allow them to apply the learning to their current leadership and management challenges. Activities include the completion of a work related project, participation in a peer mentoring process and a one-on-one telephone coaching session. This coaching session enables the facilitator to address individual participant's personal development needs. A half-day follow-up course allows participants to evaluate progress and share and celebrate success.
