Pet Food - Alpo A Cheap Alternative

By Jon Dunkerley

Would you eat this?

A good dog food for your dog, is one with a high quality ingredient base providing a high level of optimum nutrition for your pet. Dog food ingredients are selected based on their quality, and are human grade, meaning that they are also used for human consumption. Usually a greater price tag goes along with the purchase of premium dog food as the cost to find, evaluate and test a high quality ingredient can be more expensive, and because of this, some dog food manufacturers substitute quality for quantity and opt for the cheap alternative.

Why do they do this?

pet foodThey do this because they know that the uneducated public will opt to buy the cheaper alternative when given the choice. Also, it is more convenient to purchase your dog¡¯s food as your buying your own groceries, so purchasing your dog¡¯s food at the grocery store just makes sense right? Wrong!

For those of you that are unaware, Alpo is a pet food manufacturer that manufactures pet food that is sold in grocery stores the world over. Being a reputable company, one would think that Alpo would actually care about the pets that eat the food that they produce, however for the trained eye this is far from the truth.

Introducing, Alpo Lamb Meal, Rice & Barley Formula

This dog food to the trained eye is as appealing as a day old glass of milk left out in the sun. The ingredients are of a low quality, making it a terrible choice of food for your dog.

First of all, the protein source is cheap and of a very low quality. Usually on a dog food label, the ingredients are listed from greatest to least. In this case, we have corn as the first listed ingredient, with chicken by-product, poultry by-product, animal fat, and finally lamb meal.

Humane Society donates pet food

The Humane Society of Odessa had more than enough food for its approximately 135 pets this week, so the organization is passing out surplus bags of dog food, cat food and litter and bird feed to Odessans.

Del NeSmith, president of the Humane Society of Odessa, said he coordinated the donation with West Texas Opportunities after he received an especially large shipment from H-E-B in San Antonio.

Linda Reese, director of West Texas Opportunities Neighborhood Center, said the community action agency helps fulfill Odessans¡¯ daily needs with services like helping with utility and medical bills.

Wooten was there to pick up food for her mother, Elsie McCormick. McCormick has two Chihuahuas and is a Meals On Wheels recipient.

¡°I have to do all the shopping for her,¡± Wooten said.

Brenda Ellis picked up dog food for her six Shih Tzus on Thursday. Ellis is a driver for the Meals On Wheels program and said she was glad to be on the receiving end of help.

¡°I love my babies to death,¡± Ellis said of her dogs.

NeSmith said he has given out excess food in the past, but this is the first time he has spread the word through West Texas Opportunities.

¡°We¡¯ll probably continue with this,¡± NeSmith said.

Venky`s to sell health, pet food divisions

Leading poultry firm, Venky's India is planning to sell its two Pune-based divisions, nutritional health products and pet food business, the combined worth of which is nearly Rs 100 crore.

The company, in a notice to the stock exchanges, said the board of directors had decided to hive off these divisions last month in order to concentrate more on poultry, the core business. The notice also said the hive off proposal would be placed before the shareholders at an extra ordinary general meeting (EGM) shortly.

The company, however, was noncommittal on the details of proposed sale. "We have plans to restructure the two divisions. The details are being worked out," said O P Singh, chief executive officer, Venkateshwara Group, the parent firm.

The pet food division generated sales of Rs 52 crore in the year ended March 2005, registering 11.27 per cent growth over the previous year's Rs 46.73 crore.

The nutritional health product business recorded sales of Rs 36.07 crore in the year ended March 2005, up 5.6 per cent compared with Rs 34.15 crore in the previous year.
