Refund and Other Fees

Refund of Tuition
A learner may withdraw from a course or a program in progress by notifying the Registrar's Office in writing. The date of the withdrawal is the date the written notification is received.

A portion of the tuition paid may be refunded if a learner withdraws from a course (for part-time learners) or a program (for full-time learners) prior to completion. The minimum amount retained in any case for each term or quarter is the amount equivalent to the tuition deposit.

The total tuition will be reassessed on a pro rata basis. Unless otherwise stated in materials provided to learners, tuition refunds will generally be granted as follows:

  • Courses which have ended (even if the learner has received an IP or EG grade): no refund.
  • Courses that have not started: 100 per cent tuition refund, subject to the minimum retained amount described above.
  • Courses that are in progress, according to the proportion of course completed as follows:
  • 1/12 of course: 100 per cent tuition refund, subject to retention of the minimum amount described above
  • 1/6 of course: 2/3 tuition refund
  • 1/4 of course: 1/3 tuition refund
  • over 1/4 of course: no refund.

Please note that all programs and certificates are not necessarily subject to the above refund calculation. Please contact Learner Accounts Department for a complete assessment of a refund.

Refunds will normally be processed within four weeks of approval.

Other fees
Fees are subject to change without notice. All learners enrolled in undergraduate or graduate programs at the university are charged a fee to provide access to health and fitness services, counselling, career advising and other social and personal services. All ancillary fees including the Learner Services Fee are non-refundable. There may be additional charges for participation in intramurals, clubs, and other recreational activities, as well as for third-party services, such as extended health benefits.

Consult www.royalroads.ca/tuitionandfees for a list of ancillary fees and their current charges.

Undergraduate Student Association fee
All full-time undergraduate learners are assessed a fee by the Royal Roads University Student Association (RRUSA). The fee of $200 is prorated for learners in undergraduate programs other than the accelerated on-campus offerings. $40 of the RRUSA fee goes to the Royal Roads University Student Association Bursary Endowment and the amount is matched by the university.

The RRUSA sets the RRUSA fees and these fees will be subject to change. RRUSA fees are reviewed on an annual basis or as required by the RRUSA.

Challenging courses or modules
Learners who successfully challenge a course or module are given credit for that course or module but are required to pay the full tuition fee for the program. Learners who unsuccessfully challenge a course or module are assessed an administrative fee of $125.

Extension of the master's thesis or project fee
Graduate learners who do not complete the master's thesis or consulting project by the specified end date will be required to extend registration in the program on a term-by-term basis, with a term defined as three months. For each term that the learner is registered a fee of $1500 will be assessed.

Individual course registration
Some Internet-based courses are available to learners who are not enrolled in formal programs. The costs will vary depending on the program offering the course. Learners may enroll for credit or as non-credit (audit) learners. Please consult the division offering the course for availability and price.

Course materials may also be available for purchase for those who do not wish to formally register.

Enrolment in courses in excess of program requirements
Learners in programs who wish to enrol in courses that are not part of their approved programs may do so with the permission of the deans of their division and the division offering the courses.

Fees are assessed per credit as a proportion of the current program fee. Visiting learners (i.e., those enrolled in degree programs at other institutions) are assessed tuition at these rates. International learners are assessed a differential fee comparable to the differential program fee.

Incomplete (INC) grade clearance
Learners assigned a grade of (INC) will be assessed a fee of $150 per course for undergraduate courses and $150 per course for graduate courses to cover additional grading costs.
