Mini guide to Italy
Italy has so much to offer; the stunning historical monuments of Rome, the outstanding Renaissance beauty of Florence; the romantic honeymooning ambience of Venice, the stylish boutiques of Milan; the sun soaked shores of the Amalfi coast and the rolling hinterlands of Tuscany.
Just some of the many must-sees in Rome include the Arch of Septimus Severus, the Temple of Saturn, the House of the Vestals, the Temple of Antoninus and Faustina, the Arch of Titus and of course the Colosseum . A good view of it all can be had from atop the Palatino – a nearby ridge also covered in ruins.
The Pantheon is sublime, Trevi fountain and Spanish steps photogenic and the Vatican pious with its incredible St Peter’s Duomo and Sistine Chapel.
The culture and grace of Renaissance Florence is overwhelming. The remarkable Duomo, dominates the skyline, adjacent is the ancient Baptistry, guarding the Palazzo Vecchio is a copy of Michelangelo's David, across the way is the Florentine-art-laden Uffizi Gallery, while the Ponte Vecchio is legendary postcard stuff.
Venice is unique with its endless canals and ornate balconies. Best explored on foot, Venice has many incredible churches and buildings. The Grand Canal emerges at the unforgettable Piazza San Marco, boasting its campanile, Doges' Palace and St Mark's Basilica. The Bridge of Sighs is popular with lovers, but the Rialto and Accademia Bridge’s are more remarkable.
Milan is the fashion, cuisine, and opera centre of Italy. Attractions include the unfinished Cathedral, Sforza Castle, the Piazza del Duomo and Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II (world’s most elegant shopping mall).
Naples’ charismatic narrow streets noisy street markets and ancient churches make it popular, especially it’s 800 year old Duomo, Chiesa dei Girolamini (cathedral), Teatro San Carlo, the elegant Piazza Trento e Trieste, Norman castle, Castel Sant ’Elmo and charming fishing village Borgo Marinaro.
By car you can explore Tuscany, the Alps and Dolomiti, Almalfi coast and Pompeii.
