Tuna

There are many species of tuna and one of the most popular in South Forida is the Blackfin Tuna.

The Blackfin Tuna stay here all year. Mostly they are found in the Keys year round. In the winter we have a migration of Bluefin, Yellowfin, Bigeye and Albacor.

The average size of a Blackfin is 20 to 30 pounds. Targeting these species of fish can be difficult to find.

An effective way to fish for tuna is by using live pilchard, goggle eye or ballyhoo. These fish are very leader shy. My experience has been to catch most of my tuna with a 15 pound test line. Sometimes I may use 40 pound fluorocarbon leader.

One technique is to add a 1/2 ounce egg sinker just above the circle hook when fishing with live bait.

Using fresh ground chum will help to attract the fish within range of your bait.

Tuna is delicious Blackened on the grill.
