Inherited Male Pattern Baldness

Inherited Male Pattern Baldness
The disorder that has long been known as inherited male pattern baldness has been discovered to be a misnomer. In fact, women actually experience this type of baldness in greater numbers earlier than men. The reason that it has largely been known as inherited male baldness is because the pattern that it takes in women is not as readily apparent as men experience. Women tend to have a more general thinning of the hair and not as often do they experience the bald patches that are seen in inherited male baldness.

Androgenetic alopecia the real disorder known as inherited male baldness

This disorder affects both men and women all across the globe equally after the age of 50 years. What happens is that there is an excess of a hormone called dihydrotestosterone or DHT in those that suffer from inherited male baldness. This occurs in women in conjunction with their menopausal years as the estrogen in their systems diminishes and allows them to be adversely affected by the presence of DHT. In men, the balance of testosterone that is altered to become DHT climbs. The effect that DHT has on scalp hair is that is causes hair follicles to become smaller, causing the hairs to diminish in diameter and growing cycle until the follicles stop producing hair altogether.

Who is inherited male baldness inherited from?
For many years it has been believed that inherited male baldness was inherited from the mother. More recently it has been discovered that inherited male baldness is no more frequently contributed to by the mother's genes than the father's. It is also not true that if both parents show signs of inherited male baldness that the baldness experienced by their offspring will be more certain or severe than any other person.
