What are the Causes of Baldness

It should be said that there are very many causes of baldness. Some of the most common causes of baldness are also some of the easiest to remedy. Nutritional imbalances are very often the cause of baldness or hair loss. This is easily remedied by introducing more protein into the diet. Another common cause of baldness is poor hygiene. When hair becomes matted and unclean, the hair follicles become clogged and infected and can stop producing healthy hairs. Stress is another cause of baldness that one can take lifestyle steps to try to diminish. Illness, surgery and medication are all things that can cause temporary baldness or hair loss. There are also causes of baldness that are not so easy to overcome.

What is the genetic cause of baldness?
A disorder called androgenetic alopecia or commonly referred to as male pattern baldness, is a hereditary cause of baldness. It occurs in about half of all males over the age of 50 and about 40% of all menopausal women. This cause of baldness occurs when the body begins to produce too much dihydrotestosterone. This causes the hair follicles to progressively shorten the hair growth cycle. As a result the hairs become short, fine and brittle.

What causes total baldness?
When one sees a completely hairless head it is likely to be the result of either cancer treatments or a disease called alopecia totalis. This is a for of areata alopecia and it occurs when the body's immune system malfunctions and lymphocytes around the hair follicles mistake the hairs as antibodies and shut down the follicle to get rid of the alien object. This cause of baldness is most often not permanent and the hair usually returns as grey or white growth that will eventually return to the normal color. This disorder can as readily affect the body hair as the scalp hair. In about 5% of cases the hair does not return and effective treatment for this disorder are nonexistent at this time.
