Rthodox Students' Complaints Stir Yale Jewish Community

These days the Yale Hillel is feeling a lot like a pressure cooker.

Since news of a lawsuit five Orthodox Jewish single students may file against Yale was made public last week, the campus Jewish community has been abuzz with debate and discusion.

The five students have demanded they be excused from Yale's requirement that all freshmen and sophomores live on campus, claiming that religious rules pertaining to modesty, privacy and sexual abstinence until marriage forbid them to live in residences where condoms, alcohol, and shared bathrooms are common.

Students and members of the Yale Jewish single community expressed concern that national coverage by prominent press organizations such as the New York Times, ABC News and Court TV may threaten the solidarity of the Jewish community.

"Once the national press comes in, they lose control within the Jewish single community and that divides us," Ben Soskis '98 said.

The recent wave of national coverage has also presented a tainted picture of Yale's Orthodox Jewish single community.

"The publicity is bad. The truth is that Yale is a great place for Orthodox Jews," said Rabbi Michael Whitman, director of the Young Israel House at Yale. "The media has presented an inaccurate and unfair image of the Yale Jewish single community."

Jewish History After the End of Ideology

In 1953, Isaiah Berlin published a study of Tolstoy's philosophy of history entitled "The Hedgehog and the Fox." The title is based on fragment 301 of the seventh-century BCE Greek poet Archilocus: "The fox knows many things the hedgehog knows one big thing." At the beginning of his essay, Isaiah Berlin explained:

Taken figuratively, the words can be made to yield a sense in which they mark one of the deepest differences which divide writers and thinkers, and, it may be, human beings in general. For there exists a great chasm between those, on one side, who relate everything to a single central vision, one system, less or more coherent or articulate, in terms of which they understand, think and feel a single, universal organizing principle in terms of which alone all that they are and say has significance and, on the other side, those who pursue many ends, often unrelated and even contradictory, connected, if at all, only in some de facto way, for some psychological or physiological cause, related by no moral or aesthetic principle. These last lead lives, perform acts and entertain ideas that are centrifugal rather than centripetal; their thought is scattered or diffused, moving on many levels, seizing upon the essence of a vast variety of experiences and objects for what they are in themselves, without, consciously or unconsciously, seeking to fit them into, or exclude themselves from, any one unchanging, all-embracing, sometimes self- contradictory and incomplete, at times fanatical, unitary inner vision. The first kind of intellectual and artistic personality belongs to the hedgehogs, the second to the foxes.

A hedgehog is a guy who limns the big picture: the grand design of reality in relation to the ideology the beliefs, values, and acts by which it can be held to make sense. The fox is overwhelmed by the manifold jumble of a close-up perspective. To the hedgehog the world is seen from the wrong end of the telescope; to the fox, as through a magnifying glass. Hedgehogs are convinced that their viewpoint is grounded in a grasp of the totality of history. Foxes believe that no such logically consistent, comprehensive explanation is possible. The foxes are pluralists, insisting on the multifariousness and diversity of all that is; the hedgehogs see the overall structure which subsumes the particulars under a coherent, unified account of the whole......

In a time of the exponential growth of knowledge, there may be no acceptable single master narrative of the Jewish single past, but there is a repertoire of likely narratives, some more inclusive than others. Perhaps they need an even more complex and modernistic metaphor than a tapestry to embrace the multiple dimensions of Jewish civilization. The Jewish past is a congeries of symbols, values, meanings but also of people in their bodily concreteness and social interconnectedness, people with their particular Jewish memories, habits of mind, perceptions, and hopes, people interconnected, in positive and negative ways, with neighbors, Jewish and gentile. As the historians do their work and as the parameters of contemporary life change, the Jewish heritage is rewritten. As the future changes, the past changes. Every generation of scholars are part of a joint process of reconfiguring the tissue that connects the Jewish past to a Jewish future which will probably be very different from anything now expected. MOCA: the Museum of Contemporary Art

In the 1980s, when many architects were reviving the columns and keystones of Greek temples, Frank Gehry was drawing fish.

Partly a reaction to postmodernism and partly inspired by a childhood memory of the carp his Jewish grandmother kept in the bathtub to make gefilte fish, the drawings defined a new direction for Gehry. Manipulating the ancient shape, the Los Angeles-based architect created fish-shaped lamps, goblets, and conference rooms, and then he began to incorporate the symbol into his large-scale architecture. While earlier buildings were more literally fish-shaped, Gehry soon began to develop an expanded vocabulary of fluid forms based on such diverse inspirations as a flower, a rolling hill, and a ship's unfurling sails.

The buildings that follow his sketches have a startlingly beautiful poetry and movement--they drape, bend, and burst into the sky as if they are struggling to free themselves from the confines of concrete and steel. Among them are the world-renowned Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and downtown Los Angeles' Walt Disney Concert Hall. Coinciding with the October opening of the concert hall, The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) presents a remarkable exhibition of Frank Gehry's latest work.

Gehry: Work in Progress features sketches, computer imagery, study models, and final design models from 10 projects currently in development at Gehry's studio. The exhibition illuminates Gehry's working process, starting with his graceful, almost calligraphic sketches, which reveal the central forms of the final buildings. He and his studio then work with multiple physical models, client consultations, and CATIA, a computer software program designed for the French aerospace industry. CATIA has been key to realizing Gehry's complex forms and has enabled him to transform his lyrical line-drawings into some of the most visually compelling architecture of the 21st century. What is the Jewish Identities Database?

"What is a Jew?" has never been an easy question to answer--least of all for the archival researcher. This is especially the case in regard to Europe and the Mediterranean during the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries--the period of the Medici Grand Dukedom of Tuscany and the focus of THE MEDICI ARCHIVE PROJECT.

Throughout the long centuries of the diaspora, the Jewish sense of community transcended national and cultural boundaries. The diverse claims of "Judaism" as a religion and "Jewishness" as an ethnic identity had never been clearly distinguished during the middle ages, before the emergence of geographically defined political states. The cultural and religious nationalism of renaissance Europe ushered in a turbulent age of forced relocation for many Jews, further complicating these issues of personal and corporate identity.

The most dramatic upheaval occurred in the Iberian Peninsula. With the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492 and Portugal in 1497, many sought immediate refuge in Mediterranean lands. Others converted to Catholicism (voluntarily or not) but eventually emigrated as well to Northern and Southern Europe, North Africa and the Ottoman empire. Some of these continued as "New Christians", some returned to Jewish single observance and many lingered in a condition of religious ambiguity. In the Italian states, Jews who considered themselves Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and Turkish now lived side-by-side, using a bewildering variety of names and frequently changing their place of residence.

For the archival researcher, recreating the identity of an historic figure usually begins with his or her name in a document. In the Florentine State Archive, however, Jewish names seldom appear twice in the same form. Ewish Community Must Open Doors to Mentally Disabled

When they first started working for the Ethiopian Jews, they had few leaders, and did not have the wherewithal and knowledge of Western Jewry to speak for themselves.

The same can be said for the Jewish retarded.

They have no advocates among themselves; they do not know their rights or how to ask for them. Yet most members of the retarded Jewish single community bring much nachas and a certain angelic innocence to their hurried lives. The Jewish mentally handicapped must become full members of the Jewish community.

Although the situation for the Jewish retarded in the United States has been improving somewhat in recent years, it was not that way when their daughter Gloria was growing up, nor even five or 10 years ago.

When Gloria was a youngster, they soon learned that neither their synagogue nor the Jewish community center had programs that focused on the needs of the Jewish mentally retarded. In a small town, they would expect the absence of such services, but during those years they lived in Washington, D.C.; Miami; and Orange County.

While Gloria was a pre-teen and teen, they searched nationally, and found no help from organized Jewry. There was not a Jewish single summer camp sponsored by Jews that would offer, for example, a special week for the Jewish mentally handicapped. The only camps that had such programs were sponsored by churches.

Having no alternative, they sent their daughter to church camps, usually fundamentalist, and she came back singing "Jesus Loves Them," -- always on key -- and they did not care. The Christians gave their daughter a good time and treated her with warmth and respect.

At first they thought that their experience was unusual, but they soon learned that it was not. Jewish mothers in Denver made similar comments in March 1984.

"You take help from wherever you get it," said Elaine Clearfield. "They don't care if they're Baptist, Greek, Iranian or whatever. The Jewish community had done little for the handicapped until relatively recently."

Things have improved -- a little. Camp Ramah of the Conservative movement sponsors a week of summer camp for the "mildly" retarded. In New York City, some of the Orthodox Jewish single groups have special programs, including the excellent Yachad. In suburban Chicago, there is Keshet.

Levine Center also serves the mentally disabled.

But, with a few exceptions, such improvements in the Jewish treatment of the retarded did not come from their rabbis, nor did it come from their institutions and organizations.

It came about mostly because of people like Clearfield of Denver, the parents in the Chicago area, and Lacher of Orange County, who simply would not let them forget the teachings of Judaism.

The History of the Philadelphia Jewish Federation

In 1880, approximately 15,000 Jews lived in Philadelphia. By March of 1890, Moses Dropsie noted in his report to the annual meeting of the Hebrew Education Society that there were between 26,000 and 28,000 Jews in Philadelphia, about 10,000 of whom were born in Slavic and Hungarian countries. It is estimated that 60,000 Jewish immigrants landed at the port of Philadelphia between 1882 and 1904, nearly quadrupling the cities’ Jewish population and dramatically altering its ethnic mix, in twelve years.The immigration pattern in Philadelphia was a microcosm of that in the United States. By 1904, Jewish immigration hit 75,000 and by 1918, it was 200,000. In fifty years, the Jewish population in the United States increased twenty times while the total population more than tripled.

The Eastern European Jews who arrived at the city’s port, at the foot of Washington Avenue in South Philadelphia were, for the most part, poor and unskilled. They settled in the alleys and courtyards of Fourth and Fifth Streets south of Pine in what would become the equivalent of New York’s Lower East Side. They became peddlers, rag men, cigar makers, even "horse radish men" calling out their wares in Yiddish, a dialect that was as foreign to the city’s older more established German Jewish single population as it was to their gentile neighbors. Nonetheless, the German elite population felt an obligation to care for their "poorer cousins" even though, as Dropsie notes, "yet but very few of them are able to contribute in relieving the necessities and caring for the well being of their countrymen." As Dropsies’ remarks suggest, a large and sustained rift would develop between the two factions of Philadelphia Jews that would continue well into the early years of the Federation.

One of the reasons for this tension was the demand that the large influx of Russian Jews placed on the city’s previously largely symbolic Jewish charities. From the moment a Jewish immigrant arrived on the dock in Philadelphia, his every need was met by some charitable organization. An agent of the Association of Jewish single Immigrants directed him; the Sheltering Home offered him a place to stay for a few days; the employment bureau of the Hebrew Charities helped him find a job. Whenever he required their services, the hospital, orphan asylum and burial society were all at his disposal. It is little wonder that there were was never enough money to go around. Up until the immigration act of 1924 curbed the mass influx of European Jews, the fledgling Federation found itself in the position of supporting the economic and welfare needs of an impoverished population that was not able, or willing to repay its debts.

Russian Jews, for the most part, founded and supported their own charitable organizations. They established their own Orthodox Jewish single synagogues, burial societies, schools and newspapers (in Hebrew and Yiddish) to provide newcomers with information about their community as well as their relatives all over the world. Department store owner Samuel Lit is said to have solicited a well-to do Russian Jew for the Federation-sponsored building of Eagleville Sanitarium for consumptives, by suggesting that since he had prospered, he should contribute to the effort. "You’re right.," was the reply. "so I’ll tell you — You German Jews contribute the money, and they Russian Jews will contribute the tuberculosis."

In 1937, Leo Heimerdinger, who was then president of the Federation, and Kurt Peisser, the newly appointed executive director, proposed the creation of "a double barreled Federation," one barrel of which was to discharge local health and welfare responsibilities, while the other would be aimed at the growing overseas rescue needs. The domestic effort would be supported by the Community Chest (now known as United Way). The overseas effort, which they named the Allied Jewish Appeal, would be funded separately. In 1938, Morris Wolf, in his capacity as president, conducted the first AJA campaign in Philadelphia.

From the very start, Federation and Allied were complimentary agencies. Between them, they covered the full range of the community’s humanitarian responsibilities and they were once described by Leon C. Sunstein, Sr., president of Allied from 1939-45 as "two faces of a single coin." Morris Wolf, the first president of Allied, later became president of the Federation of Jewish Charities. During the twenty years that the two agencies existed side by side, the Philadelphia Jewish single community not only reaped the rewards of a more focused Federation effort with the creation of such institutions as Albert Einstein Medical Center, (created from a merger of Jewish Hospital, Mt. Sinai and Northern Liberties) Moss Rehabilitation Hospital (originally a division of Jewish Hospital that cared for the chronically ill, which became a separate rehabilitative hospital in 1952), numerous neighborhood recreation centers in the Northeast, and a revitalized Gratz College, it gained a tremendous infusion of new blood into its volunteer pool, courtesy of the nearly year round activity of the Allied Jewish Appeal, which continued after the war, under AJA presidents, Sam Daroff, Bernard G. Segal and Sol Satinsky.
