High Definition Direct View CRT televisions use essentially the same technology that has been used for standard analog television since the 1950's.

Direct View CRT TV sets contain a cathode that is located near the back of the TV tube. This cathode sits inside the television's "guns" which are responsible for sending out streams of electrons (the electron beam) to the front of the television tube. The front of the television tube is coated with phosphors which glows when struck by the electrons. The typical size of a Hidef CRT television is 26 to 36 inches.
