HDTV Set-top receivers are required to receive HDTV broadcasts via cable or satellite.    These receivers include the hardware and software necessary to communicate digitally with the satellite or cable service as well as the HDTV tuners.  When renting or purchasing a television receiver, make sure that it is capable of receiving HDTV signals as most only support standard television broadcasts.

Many cable companies and satellite television companies sell HDTV receivers that include HDTV digital recorders.   These Digital Recorders (DVRs) allow consumers to:

  1. watch programs on their own schedules
  2. skip TV commercials
  3. pause live TV shows
  4. watch one show while recording another one

When purchasing a stand-alone DVR or one that is integrated with a receiver, it is important to ensure that it supports high definition broadcasts.  Most satellite and cable companies rent or sell integrated HDTV receiver/DVR devices today.
