HDTV supports high-quality surround-sound audio.  Surround-sound makes you feel that you are ‘in the action”.   High Definition programs use Dolby Digital sound, which is also used on DVDs. This format is used to transmit up to six channels of audio depending on the program. Television programs use a variety of stereo soundtracks (2-channel) or surround sound (multi-channel).

Surround sound programs can use four-channel, five-channel or the most advanced, 5.1-channel (the .1 is the subwoofer channel). With these soundtracks driving 6 speakers, Dolby Digital creates a home theater experience that rivals the best cinema sound.
