Description
GENERAL The Windows System Administrator is a member of the Administrative Systems team responsible for the security, reliability, performance and availability of administrative applications in Stanford's diverse and distributed computing environment SPECIFIC DUTIES The Windows Systems Administrator is a liaison to the Windows System Team in the central IT Services group. The Windows System Administrator has direct responsibility for planning, deployment and configuration of Windows servers and services in support of Administrative Systems. This position has the following responsibilities: Work with clients and the application-support team to improve the performance, security, reliability and availability of administrative applications. Oversee installation and maintenance of the Windows Server operating system with a target of 99.99% reliability and availability. Plan and participate in activities in support of projects, initiatives, and seasonal activities like Commencement and year-end reporting. Assist in the evaluation and implementation of marketplace tools and utilities. Work with third-party vendors on hardware and software implementation, maintenance and support. Plan and coordinate the implementation or update of system software (including Microsoft security updates) to minimize effects on current production, testing and development activities. Provide technical expertise and project leadership, working with teammates in Administrative Systems and members of the central Windows Systems Team. Prepare and maintain documentation for systems and services software, including security, backup, and recovery, with an emphasis on ongoing process improvement. Proactively monitor and tune the performance of Windows servers. Ensure data integrity, including back-ups and system-level security for Windows servers. Monitor the knowledge bases for Microsoft and Citrix, as well as industry technology and security groups, to stay current with platform, system, and industry developments. Make recommendations for system changes or new system software, based on cost and/or operational needs and benefits. Coordinate with Storage on disk, backup and recovery requirements. Coordinate hardware and software upgrades for Windows servers with Administrative Systems clients and application-support teams. Work with the IT Services Windows Systems Group to establish and maintain technical architecture standards to ensure Administrative Systems are scalable, reliable and maintainable. Coordinate with Networking and Facilities on hardware installations. Troubleshoot production problems. Monitor, resolve or coordinate the resolution of trouble tickets. Provide 24x7 on-call support, in rotation QUALIFICATIONS This position requires a strong professional commitment to the success of our clients, coupled with a thorough understanding of the technology behind our applications. The position requires experience in Windows system administration in a rapidly changing environment; highly effective interpersonal skills; strong written and verbal skills; proven problem-solving and analytical skills; the ability to approach complex problems logically and systematically; and the ability to work effectively in a team environment SKILLS The following skills are required for the Windows System Administrator in Administrative Systems: Excellent written and oral communication skills Ability to install and support Windows operating systems and system software Ability to install and support Citrix, including the infrastructure supporting NFuse and Citrix Secure Gateway Work with Active Directory, IIS, Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM), patch-management tools such as BigFix or Update Expert, Network Load Balancing, Scripting, Citrix, SAN, TSM, File and Print Services, Remedy, Tripwire, Dell Server Class Hardware, Security Best Practices, networking utilities, and hardware diagnostics Write and maintain documentation and procedures Work independently and manage time effectively to meet deadlines Work productively with teammates and clients
