Sun Adds A Low-End Opteron Workstation And A Mobile Workstation

Looking to build on its traditional strength in the workstation market, Sun Microsystems on Monday introduces an entry-level workstation based on an Opteron processor and its first portable workstation, which utilizes a Sparc processor. The Ultra 20 workstation using a single-core Opteron processor and, with a price starting at $895, is aimed at the fast-growing market for x86-based Web Workstations, says John Fowler, executive VP for network systems at Sun. The company will add dual-core Opteron-based workstations "relatively soon," he says.

"The classic Unix/RISC workstation market has been declining in volume," Fowler says. "But we have an opportunity to grow using our technology and products in the x86 workstation space, which is growing rapidly."

With its workstation products, Sun is targeting primarily software developers and the mechanical computer-aided-design and electronic-design automation markets, he says. The Ultra 20 comes preloaded with the Solaris 10 operating system and Java development tools.

"This is not a general business desktop play," Fowler says. "These are aimed at professionals with technically complex tasks, which is one of the reasons we're bundling so many tools with this platform. People don't talk about the workstation market much anymore, but designing jets, or cars, or circuits is a big activity, and the market when combining x86 and RISC is still in the billions of dollars."

The Ultra 20 supports a variety of Nvidia Quadro PCI-Express workstation-class graphics boards as well as media and communications processors. The system also has a half-terabyte of redundant array of independent disks, or RAID, storage to safeguard data for mission-critical applications. Source from Information Week.

Installing the DeFrame, ICA, and RDP Web Clients

In order for a user to launch thin-client applications from the Launch Item gadget, the DeFrame, ICA, and RDP Web clients must be installed on the user's workstation.

The Web clients, packaged as .cab files, are installed the first time the user launches a thin-client application through the Launch Item gadget. The following .cab files are used:

• dappx.cab: Contains the DeFrame Web client. The Launch Item gadget will install this client only if a user launches a thin-client application and the client is not already installed on the user's workstation.
• wficat.cab: Contains the ICA Web client. The .cab file contains the 6.30.1050.0 version of the ICA Web client that replaces all versions prior to May 2002. The Launch Item gadget installs the ICA Web client the first time a user launches an application configured for an ICA session.
• nmstsc.cab: Contains the RDP Web client. The .cab file contains the same traditional RDP Web client that shipped with the initial OnDemand Services release. The RDP Terminal Services Advanced Client (TSAC) is not yet supported. The Launch Item gadget installs the RDP Web client the first time a user launches an application configured for an RDP session.

For the Web clients to be installed on a Windows 95/98 workstation, the user must be logged into Windows on the workstation.

For the Web clients to be installed on a Windows NT/2000/XP workstation, the user must be logged in as a member of the Administrators or Power Users group. Logging in as Administrator or a Power User is only required the first time; users can log in through a non-Administrator account thereafter. First Sun-powered laptop debuts

During the company's annual JavaOne developer fest in San Francisco this week, the company touted its Sun Ultra 3 mobile workstation alongside its Sun Ultra 20 workstation tower a part of a "try and buy" promotion to get developers to kick the tires and sign up for its developer services.

Sun followers may recognize the manufacturers: Tadpole and Naturetech. The two companies have been making notebooks based on Sun's UltraSPARC processors for several years, but now they have the full blessing of Sun.

For $29.95 per month for a three-year subscription, developers can take home the Ultra 20 tower running on AMD Opteron processors and sporting Sun's Solaris 10 operating system as well as a few other Sun software products relevant to developers.

As for the Ultra 3 laptop, the per-month fee is $39.95 or you can take the whole thing home starting at $3,400 for entry-level pricing. The Ultra 3 is expected to be available in July 2005.

The laptops come in 15-inch and 17-inch versions running either a 550 MHz or 650 MHz UltraSPARC IIi processor or a 1.28 GHz UltraSPARC IIIi processor. The Ultra 3 laptops will also sport up to 2 GB of memory installed, 512MB of RAM, a 40GB disk drive, and 2D graphics with an option to upgrade. The computers also come with 802.11b wireless networking so you can take it far away from the server room.

The laptops come pre-installed with Solaris 10, Solaris 9 or Solaris 8, although Sun would rather you take the one with Solaris 10.

Evesham Acumen DC10 - Workstation

Evesham’s new Acumen DC10 workstation stands big and tall in a matt black Chieftec DX-01B Dragon case. Inside there’s acres of space for the E-ATX Asus K8N-DL motherboard with its pair of Opteron 275 processors, and taken together the case and motherboard provide plenty of scope for expansion. The case can house a floppy drive and six hard drives plus four optical drives while the K8N-DL (which uses the nForce4 Pro chipset) has the four native SATA and two IDE connectors that you would expect, and in addition there’s a Silicon Image 3114R RAID controller with four more SATA connectors.

Evesham supplied its review model with a pair of WD 250GB SATA drives striped in RAID 0 to offer a single 466GB drive loaded up with Windows XP Pro, just as it would if you ordered this workstation. It had so many options to play with that it installed a second pair of WD drives in RAID 0 with 64-bit XP Pro, so we could switch from one OS to the other by unplugging one pair of SATA cables and plugging in the other. Of course Opteron supports both 32-bit and 64-bit software natively so the transition is effortless, so long as you have software that can take advantage of the latest version of Windows.

When we ran our SYSmark 2004 benchmark on 32-bit Windows it rattled along at a ferocious pace turning in a score of 240 marks but SYSmark wouldn’t run on the 64-bit Windows installation. The reported error related to the Adobe Acrobat element of the test suite, but the fact that there was a problem didn’t come as much of a surprise as SYSmark loads up cut-down versions of a whole host of applications and it is very fussy indeed about the state of the operating system when you install it.

We took advantage of the 32-bit/64-bit Jekyll and Hyde nature of the Evesham to run POV-Ray 3.7 Beta rendering test which supports multi-threading. Using 32-bit Windows XP the test took 16 minutes 30 seconds using only one core, which dropped to four minutes 27 seconds when we used all four cores.
