- The American Bar Association Commission on Racial and Ethnic Diversity in the Profession has announced that Vinson & Elkins partner Michael Marin is one of six recipients of the prestigious 2005 Spirit of Excellence Award, which recognizes lawyers who work to promote diversity in the law. A litigator in V&E;'s Austin office, Marin is being honored for his commitment to projects that increase minority participation in the legal profession and in the court system. Among them, Marin spearheaded the creation of the Austin Bar Association's award-winning "Pick Me! A Jury of My Peers" jury project, which teaches high school seniors the importance of jury service. Marin is also a Co-Leader of the V&E; Jury Project, a pro bono effort that utilizes litigation, legislation and education to increase public participation and diversity in the Texas jury system. "I am truly honored to receive this award," says Marin, who at age 38, is widely recognized as one of the brightest young litigators in Texas. "But the recognition should go to V&E;, which places such emphasis on public service and diversity."

- The firm's Dallas office hosted a presentation by Big Brothers Big Sisters of North Texas. V&E; partner and former Dallas Mayor Ron Kirk facilitated the event.

- On Thursday, May 19, the firm participated as a sponsor of the Hispanic Bar Association of Houston's 17th Annual President's Day Banquet. The Annual President's Day Banquet serves as the primary source of funding for the Hispanic Bar's James DeAnda Scholarship Program and its first-year law student scholarship program, which annually award scholarships to law students at each of the three Houston-area law schools.

V&E; Partner Participates in Stanford Law School's Black Law Students Association Conference
- On February 19, Barron Wallace, a partner in our Public Finance Section, participated in a panel discussion at the Stanford BLSA Spring Conference. The panel was entitled, "Confronting Corporate Politics: Balancing Private Sector Success With Public Sector Commitment." Each of the participating attorneys shared his or her perspective on achieving corporate legal success while still maintaining positive connections to organizations and causes that promote the collective progress of black Americans. Former Mayor of Dallas Joins the Firm
- Ron Kirk, former Mayor of the City of Dallas and Texas Secretary of State, joined the law firm as a partner effective February 2005. Mayor Kirk will practice in V&E;'s Dallas office, which has 125 lawyers. He will be part of the firm's public policy and finance section, which comprises 40 lawyers in Austin, Dallas, Houston and Washington. Click here to read the full article.

- On February 17, V&E; participated as a sponsor of the Minority Corporate Counsel Association's annual South/Southwest Region Diversity Dinner honoring Firm client Blockbuster Inc. and other Employers of Choice as selected by MCCA.
V&E;'s Charitable Contributions Benefit Tuskegee University
- Vinson & Elkins supports Senior Communications Counsel Mark Curriden's speaking engagements regarding his book, Contempt of Court: The Turn-of-the-Century Lynching That Launched 100 Years of Federalism. The book details the heroic efforts of two African American lawyers who in 1906 appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court to stay the execution of an African American man wrongfully convicted of rape. Most recently, Mr. Curriden spoke at the Georgetown Law Center as part of its BLSA Alumni Association and Black History weekend. The Firm has also purchased a copy of the book for every summer associate for the past three years. Mr. Curriden donates the proceeds from the purchase his book to the archives at Tuskegee University in Alabama. Vinson & Elkins recent contributions have resulted in the preservation of many of the historic records that were instrumental to Mr. Curriden's research in the writing of his book.

Dallas Partners and Associates Participate in Minority Corporate Counsel Association Event
- Mark Early , Gabriela Gallegos , Sona Garcia , Michelle Gross , Tom Leatherbury , Christina Stanland , and Holly Warrington attended the Minority Corporate Counsel Association 8-Minute Mentoring event in Dallas on January 12, 2005. Each of our lawyers had a chance to visit individually with a number of law students and lawyers of color interested in developing mentor/mentee relationships with lawyers of different experience levels. We are pleased to have had such a strong turnout to support MCCA and its new program.
