Plouha, highest cliffs in Brittany

Plouha is a little tourist resort on the Goëlo coast, which can boast the highest cliffs in Brittany. It is a sublime site which can be explored along the i>sentier douanier</i> (Customs patrol officer path).

The cliffs of Plouha is without a doubt one of the finest natural sites on the coast of Brittany. To take the GR 34 (long distance path) leading you to the Plouha Head, is an absolute must. At 104 m (341 ft) above sea level, there is a panoramic view gtom Bréhat to Cap Fréhel. This site, where ferns and gorse mix together, is very impressive. The small islands of Mauve and of Le Pommier (apple tree) are a sheltering place for many cormorants, gulls, and even petrels. You should bring binoculars with you if you really wish to enjoy the view. You can also go to the Beg Hastel Head, where you can take in the view of both Plouha Head and the little harbour of Gwin Zégal. The latter has the special feature of having kept its traditional moorings on wooden stakes. Indeed, it is one of the two harbours in Brittany of its kind alongside Porsporder in Finistère. If you take a walk at sunset, you will see the various lighthouse in the bay in action.

As far as beaches are concerned, there is the Gwin Zégal beach, the long stretch of sand of Le Palu, the Port Moguer and Bréhec beaches. The latter has a sailing school which takes on both children and adults who wish to learn how to sail (Tel: 33(0)2.96.22.62.66). The Bonaparte beach was one of the 24 centres of the French Resistance. 135 American and Canadian pilots, who planes had been shot down, left for England from this spot.

Among the seven chapels in the borough, Karmaria-an-Iskit is remarkable. It was founded in the 13th century, transformed in the 14th, 17th and 18th centuries. It has a superb entrance porch decorated with statues. Inside it, you will see the fabulous dance of death (danse macabre), in which 47 characters take part, among which the Pope, the King, but also the Carthusian Monk, the Sergeant, the Doctor, the Woman, the Usurer, the Poor, the Lover, the Minstrel and the Rope maker.
You can enjoy horse riding, mountain biking, bird watching, tennis, canoeing, diving, etc. It's hard to be bored.
